Brotherhood of Valor Recruiting

We were sent the following announcement from Midian of the Brotherhood of Valor:

Brotherhood of Valor Recruiting

I am Midian, Guild Master of Brotherhood of Valor and Tiberian Knight. We are actively recruiting new members to our guild. We are a guild based on friendship and honor. We believe that there is much evil amongst us in Britannia and we will do what is within our means to rid the world of this evil. Our goal is to develop friendships that will last lifetimes based on trust and honesty. We will strive to align all virtuous and good guilds so we can band together to attain each other's goals. We act as the light that shines on these ever so dark times. Our strength is our strict following of the Virtues put before us by the King, and those written by the famous philosopher Tiberius. By following the virtues it brings us guidance to our lawless land. It is also our duty to aid all people who are young and new to this land in any way that we can. I will not lie to you for this is not the life for all we live by a strict code that demands teamwork, dedication and loyalty. But if you feel like this is path you wish to take, the path of a valiant knight, or maybe a fearless mage please visit our website, or send a pigeon to the address listed below. I wish thee safe travels.

Fare thee well,

Freedonians Land South of Trinsic

Freedonian forces, led by El Cid himself, landed south of Trinsic near El Cid's ancestral home, the Tower Grym Slaed. They were immediately assailed by harpies, trolls, ettins, ogres and giant spiders. These were quickly dispatched and the ruins of the tower claimed. Onlookers, including the wandering healer Benedict, were moved to tears as El Cid knelt at the grave of his mother, still strewn with flowers and untouched by the power of Minax. "Its good to see the boy come home," Benedict later remarked. "now perhaps things can be set aright in these parts." Reconstruction of the tower has already begun.

Strange Sighting

The following sighting occured over a week ago. This report was made on the Ring of Steel public messageboard:

While things were winding down in the wee hours of this Saturday morning, a strange occurance appeared just south of the entrance to Wrong.

My father, Phaltran, was working at his tinkering bench when it occured, and he related the story to me.

"Young Aragorn came a running yelling 'Come quick and see what appeared!'" Well being curious the lot of us, Mirabel, Sleath, Rakhir, Joram and myself took off after the scamp to see what the commotion was about.

"To our wondering eyes we saw what appeared to be a room, dropped right on the edge of the mountain. It seemed to be an armory for there were weapons along its 'walls' and good fighters standing all about.

"We didn't gawk long for immediately our group was set upon by a handful of brigands. I'm no fighter, but I was in good company, so I helped out with a swing of my trusty hatchet here and there to hobble those meanies.

"Soon all the evil baddies were dispatched and we were allowed to examine the 'room' more closely. Dang if it didn't appear to be so much curtains, a large stone altar and lots of decorations of shields and weapons.

"Rakhir and I debated whether or not the brigands came with the room, or if they just happened to be camped in the area. I think twas a bit of both. We find out if'n this happens again.

"At least I kept my wits about me. I immediately pulled out a notepad and piece of charcoal with which I captured the likeness. When I returned to the tower I applied a few tinctures to the drawing as I recalled. See for yourself."

Baja Stress Relief Night (Trammel)

The following announcement was posted by Chance on the Baja Stratics Forum:

This is the official announcement of Baja Stress Relief Night, hosted by the Baja S|S.

Time: Sunday, February 4, 11pm est/10pm cst/9pm mst/8pm pst.

We'll be meeting up at the Skara bank in Trammel beforehand, and promptly at the appointed time we will be gating to the BK (Bone Knight) room. Our objective: kill every undead in sight, regardless of who thinks it is 'their' kill. No healing, In Loring, curing, or ressing of non-event personnel will be tolerated, no matter how loudly they demand it. S|S folks, you are not required to bring your thief char, you can bring a warrior type if you'd like. I will bring my thief simply because S|S is hosting the event.

If we have enough people, multiple parties will be formed, with one designated 'looter' per party who can carry off all the loot from corpses so the killing types don't have to worry about it. We'll be taking the loot not so much because we want or need it, but because we don't want to just leave stuff lying around for other people to help themselves to. Gold will be divvied up afterwards for those who care, junk weps/armor from the BKs will be smelted and ingots divvied up between those who want them.

If we REALLY get a lot of people, we will expand and take over one or both of the lich rooms on the next level down.

So, bring your silver weapons, your pent-up frustrations, and an extremely bad attitude, and we'll see you there!

Chance of Baja

Return of the King

The following was submitted by Arrianna to UOSS:

Return of the King

Arrianna stood on the roof of the Mage Tower in Dawn. She waited for the rest. Desmond was to be brought to her, and many were relying on her to exorcise that which seemed to be possessing the King. She was nervous, to say the least. She considered herself a simple student of the virtues, not a leader of them. Oh how she wished Arakthor was here! He would know exactly what to do! Instead, it was up to her, and many hours of study she had devoted to understanding and mastering the ritual needed to drive the spirit from Desmond. But one slip, one mistake, and the results could be catastrophous.

Will Avengem entered the arena on the roof. Behind him was Queen Hayloh, who was comforting a distraught and angry Desmond, his wrists and ankles in shackles. A tear formed in Arrianna's eyes to see her King in this manner. But she had herself asked for these precautions. His life and hers were at stake. She wished it wasnt necessary, and would gladly forfeit her life for his, if it were that simple. But it was not.

Behind the King, came Opalescense, Quest Knight of the Virtue Compassion. Followed by Vengence, historian and long time friend of the King. And then Kryn Garamonde, also a Quest knight of the virtue Justice, as well as squire in the Order of the Blue Rose, in the Kingdom of Dawn.

She offered them each a smile as they moved to surround Desmond in a circle. Arrianna directed them to each stand at a specific point. Arrianna herself stood as the one of faith, her back to the north. Opal, one of purity and innocence, her back to the south. To her right was Kryn, one of strength in will and body, his back to the west. And Vengence, one of wisdom and knowledge, his back to the east.

Queen Hayloh and the Prince Riain looked on with others of the Kingdom, and friends, as Will Avengem took up a guard position to make sure none interrupted the ritual. Arrianna raised her voice to proceed, hoping to gain confidence from the strength of her musical voice.

She began the weaving of the spell, by reciting the meaning of the virtues, their place in this world, and more still, their place in King Desmond. Desmond shrieked with rage, calling to those watching to aid him, proclaiming that Arrianna was the one possessed. Possessed by Na-Krul. But she wavered not. The spells power infused King Desmonds body with raw energy derived of the virtues themselves. Culminated from the principles of Love, Truth and Courage. The spirit waned and struggled to free itself from the pure virtuous magics. But it lay trapped within Desmond with only one escape...the bracelet from wence it came.

*Arrianna continued, as Vengence added his words, recalling the counts of Desmonds life. Of his wife and dear child. Of the kingdom that loves him dearly. Desmond, the true Desmond began to stir from within. The spirit was enraged and cornered. It was then, that Arrianna directed Opal to make contact with Desmond. The touch of skin allowing the spirit a new host to flee too. And so it did, but too late did it realize its mistake. For Opal was one of purity. her body, mind and soul, uncorrupt, and worse for the spirit, uncorruptable. There was naught to control within. A body of pure goodness. The spirit was enraged further. Opal was stunned, as she tried to block out the whispers of evil intent the spirit threw desperately at her. But it would avail him not at all. For the spirit was dying, and Opal was too pure.

Again, Arrianna directed, Kryn this time, to make contact with Opal. Once more allowing the spirit an escape. This time to a body that was not pure, so it was inviting to the spirit, and thus was taken. Once inside, Arrianna entered Kyrns mind, telling him how to harness the strength of his mind and the power of her words, to separate from the spirit, that which was Desmond.

Putting the evil in one orb of blackness, the good into one of pure bluish light. One belonged to the spirit of the demon, the other, was a part of Desmond that must be returned. For if a part of Desmond were to die, so to would part of the land.

Kyrn bellowed in anguish, the task at hand was testing the boundaries of his physical and mental strength. Many watched silently, others prayed for him to outlast. The Queen and Prince watched in horror and hope, as Arrianna continued. As both orbs of dark and light were beginning to wane. As a candle flickers in strong light, Arrianna held forth the bracelet, as she slipped it from Desmonds wrist. The spirit fled to the one place it was safe from the magics Arrianna and the rest had conjured to vanquish it. Into the bracelet. She then took Kryn's hand in hers, accepting the light into her, that she could bless it, and mold it back into shape and form that Desmonds weakened body could accept. She then moved to Desmond, taking his hands in hers, staggering under the taxing spell, she transferred the light into Desmond.

A hush reigned at this moment, and all eyes were on Desmond. Had they been successful? Did the spell work? Or were they wrong all along?

Desmond finally broke the silence, asking where he was. His memory of all that had transpired since Na-Kruls resurrection was a void of nothingness. Vengence replied that he was in Dawn, among friends. Asking the King who was his wife, Desmond replied to his old friend, "Hayloh, of course!"

A sigh of relief erupted from the crowd of concerned citizens and friends, as they took this as a positive sign. Arrianna collapsed back into a chair, exhausted from the spell, smiling softly as her King was returned. Rejoicing and celebration went long into the night at the Acropolis, and peace reigned once more in the Kingdom.

A Gambling booth, and a fortune teller for everyones amusement.

The contests featured a mighty show of mastery over the bow by many of our patrons, and a show of speed in our horse races, as well as a show of intellect and cunning in our Scavenger Hunt and Puzzle games. All in all many prizes were won and food and gold exchanged hands.

The highlight of the night though, was the suprising turn out for our "Beast Wars" a series of fierce bouts as tamers from all over their lands brought forth their fiercest dragons and nightmares to face off in a battle to the death!! And for the crowds amusements bets were made on each bout much money was won and lost as spectators cheered for thier respective fighters...... Match Highlights included:
A Last minute comeback in a Dragon vs. Dragon Match

A Fierce Wyrm vs Dragon Match

A Handicap Match 2 Dragons vs one White Wyrm

Virus Warning

The following warning was posted to UOSS:

Virus Warning

It has come to our knowledge that people are sending trojan backdoors via ICQ and email to UO players, claiming they have a house for sale. The file in this particular case is called LordRoni.zip and contains a file with a very long name: "SELLING MY HOUSES IN TRAMMEL AND FEL!!!!!!!!", then lots of spaces to hide the file extension, and finally the extension ".exe". If you open the zip file you will not see the file extension. Double-clicking the harmless looking filename will then install a backdoor program on your PC, which will give *anyone* *complete* access to *all* your files via the internet. Needless to say, you don't want that to happen.

Should you be the victim of this scam then please visit the McAfee website where you can find detailed information about this trojan and more importantly info on how you can remove it from your system. We advise everyone to have a proper virus scanner active at all times, and of course never accept files from people you do not know or do not trust.

Let's be careful out there!

The Corporation has posted part 2 (or 2) of their interview with Lum the Mad, formerly of the site of same name. The introduction to Part 2 is below, with it's entirety found here and Part 1 found here.

Editor's Note: Welcome back! We now return you to the Lum Interview. Today's section is entitled The Revenge of the Wombat, and What Lum Wants. Here too, you will finally understand why we said to hell with posting an interview, and just posted the chat log. No one, not even Shakespeare, could have made this coherent. Never ever put lots of game writers into one small room.

UO: Third Dawn Gesture Video Clips

With great pleasure we present a set of movies that shows a selection of the different type of gestures one can make in the new UO: Third Dawn Client.

The movies subsite notes about some software particulars:
The movies that are available for download here have been compressed with a special codec that can create small video files while at the same time maintaining a very high image quality. To play the movies you will need the Windows Media Player and a special TSCC codec (The QuickTime movie player does not support this type of movie files). If you did not already install the TSCC codec then please do so by downloading this file (191 Kb) and then executing it.

Ahh the king has spoken

[A recent Freeborn Press article concerned Lagesek's response over his experience in the war of Dawn, and referred you, our readers, to his entire post on an outside message board. More recently, a recent news submission contained a fuller response by Hellrazor to points not mentioned in the Lagesek's article, but rather to the original post, and so may be out of context for some readers. Although we'll be posting the following rebuttal, it is my opinion that related "articles" are better suited as a more direct conversation between the related parties, and so this "thread" on the front page of the Freeborn Press ends here. -Nobody]

As a followup to HR's post.

I do not see you speak once of any sort of apology for the actions of one of your guildmembers. Even he had the decency to make sure I was aware he regretted his words and actions. I will assume that your anger over my flogging of your town clouds your judgement in this and ignore this added insult.

My reasons for not approaching Dawn on the night of the event were simple. I felt it would be best if I did not do so in anger. I was led away quickly and quietly as to not further inflame the situation. On the next day I spoke with most involved and cleared it all up.Or so I thought!

I wanted to mention that the things you point to were not what made me angry. I have died ingame more times than I can count in the last week let alone the 3 years I have been a part of this world. I did not either regret the loss of some 30 regs. I did however feel it worthy of note that a group that proposes to hold such high ideals would just as easily sink to such lows.

I am open to discuss this with anyone from Dawn if you still feel it necessary.

Good luck

[After Lagesek's original submission, above, he asked that this next part be added. -Ed.]

I have just noticed in HRs post that I am referred to as Lagesek of Avalon.

I do not currently hold any affiliation with Avalon besides friendship. I am a member of the guild NX if you need to qualify this.

Additionally I would like to note that I have spoken with Lady Hayloh of Dawn and I am satisfied with her apology and explanation. I asked for the posts on Avalon messageboard to be deleted and they have. I consider this matter with Dawn closed.

Posted by Keith at 2:02 AM

I'm very disappointed that the Baja Freeborn Press allowed Lagesek of Avalon to use your news page as an editorial page. Since you granted him space to express his views, I hope you will provide me space to express mine.

It was made very clear in the rules that participants should not bring anything they couldn't afford to lose. We had a "no looting" rule for the event, but common sense dictates that it is absolutely impossible for anyone to 100% enforce a "no looting" rule, especially not in Felucca. We had 6 guilds and dozens of people involved in last night's event. Additionally, we had a few people who weren't even part of the event trying to take advantage of the battle to loot people. We always knew this might happen; thus the disclaimers to not bring anything you couldn't afford to lose. Given the scale of the battle, the number of people involved, and all the many factors, I think that any looting was kept pretty minimal considering we had dozens of people there and only 2 reported cases of looting (including Lagesek's).

Secondly, it was made very clear in the rules that you shouldn't participate if you were concerned about fame, karma, or dying. I would think that if you come to an event that is clearly labeled as a war that you should expect that you might be killed by someone.

I'm sorry if Lagesek had a run-in with someone who accused him of cheating, but hey, that's life. Unless one of us acquires mind control powers, we'll just have to be satisfied that every person playing UO is operating under their own free will and expressing their own opinion. Of course, this didn't stop Lagesek from calling all of Dawn and the Dark Tower "petty and childish".

The event was 100% voluntary for all the participants. No one HAD to come. Nor did we HAVE to open up this event for other guilds and communities to take part in. Reactions like Lagesek's are the exact reason why more people don't hold events open to other communities. No matter what you do or how hard you work to make a good event, there is always one or two people who want to focus entirely on the negatives and not give credit for all the many things that went well. Most of the feedback I have received about the event has been pretty positive.

Lagesek never brought any of these concerns to Dawn, either last night or today; instead he went over to the Avalon public board and slandered us and the Dark Tower there. I propose that people who don't seek solutions to problems usually have no interest in a solution, they just want to spread bad blood around.

Lastly, Lagesek accuses us of being childish and petty. Personally, I feel its childish and petty to go slandering an entire town of over over 100 people because he had one bad incident during a PvP event he didn't even have to come to.

Groups like Dawn and the Dark Tower work very hard to create events that other people from outside their guildstone can participate in. It makes me sad that no matter what you do, there are always one or two people that feel a need to slander you. I read stuff like this and wonder why we bother.

UOKnight = SubSeven Trojan Virus

I read the following warning on UOSS:

UOKnight = SubSeven Trojan Virus

This additional warning comes into us from a player that unfortunately experienced this first hand:
I downloaded a program called UOKnight, claiming to be a bit like UOA, which is actually the SubSeven trojan horse. When I ran this program a message informed me I needed some DLL files, but when I went to download them off the website, I was informed that they were not on the server. Then shortly after a small chat window popped up informing me that Sub7 was installed.
It probably cannot be stated enough times that it is extremely important that you never ever use programs that have not be specifically approved by OSI (UOAssist is one such program).

At this point, we are not going to divulge the address to the site, mostly because we don't want people going to their website. But I think this warning will give you all enough of a heads up not to take them seriously if you do accidently come across it.

For those that do visit the site, we at Stratics want you to know that we are in no way affiliated with their site despite the fact that they are using our good name to make themselves look legitimate.

NOTE: There is also a fansite called UO Resources that can be found at http://www.uoresources.com. While extremely close in name, this is a totally different site and is 100% legitimate. The difference is the "s" on the end of the name.

A Downside of Last Night's War

On the down side of the opinions of the war in Dawn, not every event goes well for everyone. This afternoon, Baja resident Lagesek submitted his short-yet-aggressive critique about last night's war in Dawn. In the first half of his post he comments:

For the most part it was a one sided effort with the DT and the King's men and women romping all over Dawn. When it was all over (or so we were told) and the dust had settled many dead lay on the field in front of one of Dawns towers.

We the victors rested (lagged) in front of those collecting their spirts and their belongings. All of a sudden we are called to arms again! It seems Sanglant had turned on the tower and those in its service were asked to take him down.

After a valiant battle sanglant succombed to the many and lay dead at our feet.
He continues on with more personal opinions in the original post, which can be found here, on the Avalon Public Forum.

Happy Birthday to Hazard!

Please join me in wishing Hazard, Editor-in-Chief of the Freeborn Press, a happy birthday this Sunday (tomorrow). A humble man originally from the city of Cove, Hazard seeks no elaborate festivities for his birthday; a simple round of "Happy Birthday to You" will be satisfactory in celebrating the anniversary of his birth.

War in Dawn

It was time.

King Desmond's army stood before him, clad in jet black, a strange assortment of knights and warriors of Dawn, citizens of the Village of Fairhaven, and members of the dreaded Dark Tower. Many nervous and hateful glances were exchanged between the Dawnites and those of the Tower...for they had long been enemies...but dire times called for dire measures, and despite the involvement of the Dark Tower, still these soldiers of Dawn stood by their King.

Of course, Desmond was scantly recognizeable as their ruler, for his hair had gone from light brown to jet black in the hours before the battle. And his eyes...his eyes were like 2 blazing pits from hell, red and piercing.

Desmond smiled. He had received word scant hours earlier that a message had been dispatched to the Royal Guard from the Lord General urging them to join forces with the Royal Court. Apparently some of the guards, including the ringleaders who were organizing the military takeover of Dawn, had fled during the night. So, they think their chances will be better if they join forces against me, Desmond thought.

Mistress Ivy of the Dark Tower approached Desmond. "I take my leave of you now...I leave my children in your care," Ivy said, gesturing to the Dark Tower soldiers.

"Aye, they will serve the Tow...er, they will serve Dawn well," Desmond replied.

Ivy laughed. "Correct on both counts," she said as she walked away.

Desmond turned back to his soldiers, looking his forces over. "Patriots of Dawn, today shall be a glorious day," he said, "for today we free our kingdom from the traitors and usurpers who have siezed out homeland! DEATH TO ALL TRAITORS!"

"DEATH TO ALL TRAITORS!", the soldiers cried out in reply.

"Mystics, practice your art...open the moongates!"

Multiple blue moongates shimmered deep in Southern Dawn, and Desmond's army flooded out of them into the forest. Silently, Desmond led the soldiers northward.

The first skirmish occured scant minutes later, as Desmond's forces stumbled upon an enemy patrol. Desmond recognized their guild insignia...they were from the fabled Savage Truth guild. So, the Royal Court had turned to their old friends and allies for support...as much good as it would do them, Desmond thought.

In moments, his forces were upon them.

The paladins of the Savage Truth were taken by suprise, and overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of Desmond's forces...but still, they battled on, their swords slashing, seemingly everywhere at once. The bodies of dozens of men lay strewn about them. But then, after what seemed an eternity, the legendary Lord Falwyn fell, lost in a swarm of black...and the hero Tibereous was lost not long after.

Desmond's army moved on.

Approaching the center of the Kingdom and Dawn Tower, Desmond found his forces set upon by wave upon wave of Royal Court soldiers, including more Savage Truth members. The Royal Court, rather than facing Desmond's army en masse, decided to split into several smaller groups. However, the strategy worked against them, as it allowed Desmond's numerically inferior force to beat down the smaller individual groups. Still, the Royal Court's numbers seemed to be unending...until finally, the last of them fell to the blood-stained ground.

Desmond gazed about himself. They, too, had taken heavy casualties...but the battle was done. Once again was he Dawn's one true leige and lord!

Suddenly, a lone soldier rode towards Desmond through the mist. As he drew closer, King Desmond recognized him. It was none other than Sir Malchar, Grand Magistry of the Blue Rose, Dawn's Knighted order. However, Malchar wore niether the black uniform of Desmond's army, nor the blue of the Royal Court, or the red of the guards. Malchar took no sides in the battle, refusing to fight against his countrymen.

"Like a true coward," Desmond smirked.

One of the Dark Tower soldiers unsheathed his sword. "Sire, should I..."

"No," Desmond replied. "Let him come. He is harmless."

Malchar approached. "Desmond, you must stop this madness," he pleaded. "The bracelet is controlling you...please, my liege, come with me that we may find a way to cure you of this evil!"

Desmond only laughed. "You poor fool," he said. "What makes you think I want your cure?" He turned to one of his soldiers to give the order to have Malchar killed.

Suddenly, the defeated ladies Wildstar and Vixen of the Royal Court cried out, almost in unison, "Now!"

With a loud whine, a moongate appeared out of nowhere next to Desmond and Malchar. Malchar grabbed Desmond, and they both fell into the gate. A few of Desmond's soldiers lunged after him, but it was too late; the gate had vanished.

"The King has been abducted!" someone cried out.

"Aye, just as we planned," Lady Wildstar said. Vixen nodded in agreement.

Puzzled, Desmond's army slowly began the task of gathering the prisoners and tending to the dead and wounded. They now controlled Dawn...but still was Dawn without a king.

New Improvements to CoM SH

Durham Stargazer from the UO Journal sent us this Council of Mages Factions news:

New Improvements to CoM SH

Using a bit Magic I traveled to view the Improvements on the Pacific Shard to the CoM Stronghold. Eager to see these improvements I ran from Vesper to the Moongate. Arriving in Magincia I raced up to the Stronghold. The first thing I did was check out the farthest bridge. I ran down right into a brick wall closing off the entrance. I said this is great I explored around the corner to the south and found the windows. I wondered to myself if one could teleport inside. I then ran around to the other bridge and was stopped right on the entrance to the northern bridge. I could not enter the Stronghold. Being "Young" I figured I could not join but being the curious type I tried. I was able to join as a "Young" person.

I went inside as I approached the entrance I noticed new railing blocking off the little breach area. I went inside and found things pretty normal. Meeting a CoM member I introduced myself and asked if could test the new Stronghold. He agreed so we went around to the south bridge and around the corner to the south side by the ocean. I then asked him if he could teleport thought the window into the rear of the Stronghold. He sadly was able to do this on the first try. I was very dishearten by this revelation it seems there are still two ways to enter the Stronghold. What are the High Wizards and Guardians thinking?

OSI Clarifies Account Info Policy

Hellrazor sent us the following new item:

OSI Clarifies Account Info Policy

Recently there have been rumors that anyone with the product ID code of a UO account could have the account information changed. Obviously, this wouldn't bode well for people who were given or sold someone else's account before OSI instituted the Account Transfer Program. I emailed OSI about this, and they gave me this clarification:

Here in UO account support, we only release information pertaining to an account if the player can verify the account with the last 8 digits of the credit card number. If there is no credit card on the account, then we use the registration code to verify the account. At that time, the player must also verify the address, phone number, and email address on the account. We use these means for the protection of the account. At times, we use the registration code to look up an account if the customer has forgotten the user name and password. But once we pull up the account with that code, the player still must verify additional information.

I hope this sets some worries to rest. I'd also like to applaud OSI and EA customer support for the fast response, I received this personal and detailed answer less than 48 hours after I emailed the inquiry. Well met!

In this week's new 'toon episode we deal with the contentious issue of whether or not all the fame ImaNewbie has received over the years is beginning to go to his head. Will Ima's "Star Status" cause him to become just another celebrity snob ... a "Legend in his Own Mind?" Check it out.

Also I added an update on the new ImaTown Citizen's Stone on Pacific. If you have an "Ima" character on Pac, he no longer has to be a lonely outcast. Now he has friends! The stone is up and running now so what are you waiting for?

OSI: Client Patch 2.0.6c

The following was just posted to FYI on the UO.com website:

Client Patch 2.0.6c

We are targeting to release client patch 2.0.6c this evening. This patch contains additional localization files and resolves some compatability issues with the Third Dawn client.

Please note: Once you have received this patch, you must completely shut down and restart your Ultima Online client before you will be able to reconnect to the game.

If you have any difficulty receiving this patch, please check the following:
  • Check the "Patch" directory within your Ultima Online directory (the default location is C:\\Program Files\Ultima Online\Patch). This directory should be empty. Any files in this directory should be deleted.
  • If you are unable to connect to the patch server at all, and are using an original (Non-T2A) version of Ultima Online, you may need to update your verinfo file. For details on updating this file, please see the information posted at http://support.uo.com/tech_6.html.
  • Run a virus scan on your computer.
If after trying the above, you are still experiencing difficulty patching the Ultima Online client, please contact Technical Support at tech@uo.com.

OSI: Spawn Changes

The following was recently posted to the Testing for Next Update on the Ultima Online Web site:

Spawn Changes

The way creatures spawn within UO has been changed to a more dynamic and reactionary system. The new spawning system will allow for better system control over how creatures spawn within UO, and will allow for better defined and detailed dynamic spawn changes. As a result of better control over the spawn system in UO, spawn behavior may alter. We will continue to watch the spawn rate, and make changes as necessary.

OSI: If I'd Known Then...

The following was recently posted to the Online Community Relations page on the Ultima Online Web site:

If Id known then what I know now...

Now theres a phrase that gets plenty of use. If Id known in high school what I know now, Id have gotten away with a lot more. If Id known in college what I know now, Id have Tyrants job. And to be quite honest, if Id known then what I know now, I wouldnt have been beaten senseless by a rabbit the first time I played Ultima Online.

But thats the thing about UO. Once youve been around the block a few times, you know all the tricks. You know better than to take on a rabbit with your practice sword. You know that the minute you head off to the Lost Lands, your armor will break and youll have to trudge all the way back if you havent brought a spare. You know never to try to run past the Britain bank in a hurry. You know how, when, and where to best raise your skills and stats.

Unfortunately, most new players in Britannia dont know these things unless theyve got a veteran player sitting next to them. And seating a veteran player next to every new UO player just isnt in my budget. (Not to mention it might be a bit disconcerting to open the front door and see Veteran Bob appearing to help you play UO.) So the question is, what can we do about it? What can we do to help new players get through those first few days in Britannia without hurting, maiming, or embarrassing themselves?

One of the projects Im working on right now will focus on all those things that we should have known when we first set foot in Britannia, but didnt. And thats where I need your help. If youre interested, drop me an email and tell me the one, single thing you wish youd known the first time you played UO. Be honest. Be brutal if you want. I wont hold it against you.

After all, Im the one who was whomped by a rabbit.

The wind howled through the empty streets of Dawn. The citizenry huddled behind their barred doors, fearful to step outside in violation of the mad "curfew" established by the Royal Guard. One such citizen had already done so, and his head was placed upon a pike in the center of town as a warning to any others who dared to challenge their will.

The streets, the shops, even Merchant Square and the vendor mall, were empty...only the Royal Guards could be seen, riding back and forth throughout the kingdom on their endless patrols. It seemed they never rested. St. Michael and War Child rode toward Dawn Tower together, canvassed in steel and weapons at the ready. The doors were barred. War Child moved as to bash the door in, but St. Michael bade him to hold. "It will be ours soon enough," he said, a grim smile crossing his face. "At this time tomorrow, Dawn will be ours...!"

Inside the Tower, the Royal Court and their soldiers drafted their strategy against the dual threat of the guards and the King's Army by candlelight. Lady Wildstar's face, normally bright and happy, was sullen and grim. How would she be able to abduct the king, that he could be returned to normal and assume the crown once more? Surely he would be well guarded; and the streets promised to be rife with war and chaos. She knew not the answers; but she knew that if they did not succeed in their task, if the Royal Court fell to either the Guard or the King's army, that Dawn was surely doomed. Tomorrow would tell the tale...

King Desmond sat at the fire, sharpening his spear over and over again, as Hayloh watched in concern and fear. Were his eyes truly red? Nay, how could such a thing be possible, it had to be an optical illusion caused by the fireplace nearby...

...and yet, there were other changes as well...a dark aura surrounded Desmond, something that could not be seen, or smelt, or touched, but it was there. And although this was her husband, the man she had married, yet in some way she could not descibe, it was not...it was as if something else had been overlayed on top of him, something transparent and evil...

Outside, Lord HellRazor continued his grave task of gathering the King's soldiers and going over the battle plans. And as the hours ticked by, a strangely eerie smile began to cross Desmond's face.

Tomorrow it would be at an end, Desmond thought.

Tomorrow, the traitors and conspirators will stain the fields of Dawn red with their blood.

Tomorrow, Dawn will once again belong to...

...I, Na-Kr...

Desmond paused, momentarily confused. Did he almost say Na-Krul? All this preparation for battle must have had him momentarily distracted.

He returned to sharpening his sword, and the smile once again danced over his lips.

Hayloh wept.

Freeborn Press Interviews Royal Family of Dawn

Tonight, Bajas Freeborn Press enjoyed the rare opportunity to interview the royal family of the Kingdom of Dawn. King Desmond, Queen Hayloh, and their son, Prince Riain are three of our Shards most prominant citizens, a fact especially true currently thanks to the recent events & role-playing which Dawn has been promoting.

Dawn, located East of the Dungeon Wrong on Felucca, is one of the oldest player-cities on Baja. The Kingdom of Dawn is host to several guildstones for its membersincluding one for guards and another for merchantsand their citizens guildstone boasts Bajas highest number of veteran members at 137, with a total membership at 167.

Dawns most recent activitiesinvolving dissent in the kingdom and threats against the royal familypromise to come to a violent head this Friday, and two of our staff met with the royals to find out the facts on these latest happenings. A last-minute interview began tonight at 7:45pm PST in the current Freeborn Pressroom, near the Shrine of Justice. Although the interview was conducted in secret, to maintain the safety of the royal family, communication crystals were set-up to broadcast the conversation across Sosaria, into the Dawn Mage Tower, the Avalon Town Hall, the Baja Mage Tower, the Dark Tower, and the Golden Brew.

The complete transcript of the interview session, along with several paintings of the session, can be found on the Freeborn Press message board, here. The Freeborn Press hopes to conduct similar interviews with various prominant members of the Baja community in the near future, each one broadcast across the Shard in a similar manner to tonight.

Interview tonight with Royal Family of Dawn

News Flash! The Freeborn Press has been granted a last-minute interview with King Desmond Cross, the rule-in-exile of the Kingdom of Dawn, and his royal family.

King Desmond's realm is being torn apart from within, with Dawn currently in the heart of a violent state of political upheaval. The royal family has come under fire from a faction of former allies, and the once-loyal royal guards take a stand against both groups. All the action is threatening to come to an explosive head this Friday evening, as all three divisions and will meet in what many feel is a "winner take all" war.

The interview with the royals of Dawn will begin tonight (Wednesday, June 24th), at 7:45pm PST, in a secret location. However, we will be broadcasting the interview live--via communication crystal--to four public locations:

Anyone and everyone is invited to come and listen to the interview of three of the most pivitol characters currently on Ultima Online's Baja Shard, as conducted by Hazard (Editor-in-Chief of the Freeborn Press) and Nathan Harper (Emissary of the Freeborn).

Warning: Trojan Alert with Fake UOTrace Program

The following warning was posted to UOSS:

Trojan Alert with Fake UOTrace Program

Thanks to Robert for sending us in the following warning about a trojan horse version of UO Trace. The following message was received via ICQ:
Hello, my friend has asked me to help promote his upgraded Ultima Online Utility UOtrace. For those of you who don't know this has been the premier way of testing server connections for ages, and now with the new version feedback on its performance is necessary. Please click the following link to go to the UOtrace homepage, and email with any feedback or bug reports you may have. http://www.geocities.com/XXXXXXXXXXXXXX
DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS PROGRAM! Not only is it a fake, but it contains the SUBSEVEN virus, which will open up your computer to a malicious hacker, and also records your password cache.

As a reminder, do not ever accept a download from an untrusted source. If you need to download a program for UO, make sure to only do so from a trusted source such as from OSI or from Stratics.

Shades of Ethereal

Nobody and I were travelling throughout Sosaria tonight, and noticed something curious about ethereal horses. Many of you may know there are four types of horses available in UO. The differences are minute, but there are two light-colored "thinner" horse types and there's both a light- and dark-colored "thicker" horse. When you double click an ethereal horse statue one horse-type of the four options is randomly generated, and this randomness happens with each time you create the ridable version of the ethereal horse.

If you look closely, you can see the differences, especially when the random generation produces the dark-colored horse, which becomes a darker ethereal mount. So those of you looking to ride a darker ethereal mount and don't mind recreating your mount a few times in quick succession actually have that option.

It's possible the same random color cycling occurs with the other ethereal mounts, although we haven't experimented with this possibility yet. This also saves the collector from having to buy four separate horse statues.

The Corporation Accosts Lum the Mad

The Corporation recently had the opportunity to interview Lum the Mad, formerly of his site of the same name. Below is the introduction for part one, and that entire part can be found here. (Part two is not yet available.)

The Corporation Accosts Lum the Mad

Upon hearing that Lum the Mad, notorious website ranter of all things Massive Multiplayer Online Gaming, was looking to become a tool of the Man, we took it upon ourselves to get one last interview out of him. This was rather difficult at first, since he tends to be a little shy at times. At first we tried kidnapping his wife, but apparently she comes with genital-seeking knife attached, so we gave that up pretty quick. Finally after threatening to go into the future and kill his yet-unborn firstborn child, he relented. Or maybe he just got tired of us asking him. Tweety provided her Robin Quivers-esque commentary to my Howard Stern. Galt was there for shits and giggles. Presented for you now: a down and dirty heart-to-heart with Scott 'Lum The Mad' Jennings about MMOGs, archenemies, and all things Mongbat...

OSI: Karma Locking

The following was posted to Testing For Next Update on the Ultima Online Web site:

Karma Locking

Players will be able to lock their karma. By locking karma, players will be able to control their character's status titles better. Players who wish to appear as "evil" will be able to kill monsters without gaining both fame and karma. Players will still gain or lose fame, regardless of karma lock status. The important thing to remember about karma locking is that you can only prevent yourself from gaining karma, not losing it.

The karma lock will function in the following manners:
  • The first time a player goes "negative" in their karma rating, their karma will no longer be able to raise until they visit a shrine to be "cleansed". New characters start at just above the zero karma setting, within the positive range. If players "cleanse themselves," therefore "unlocking" their karma, and then do an action that generates any more negative karma, the karma will lock again and will not be able to raise karma until the player visits a shrine to be cleansed again.
  • If a player with positive karma chooses to lock their karma from raising any higher, they may go to the Chaos Shrine and speak the word "bal". Doing so will lock their karma, and they will receive the message "You once again control your destiny".
  • Players wishing to remove their karma lock may visit the virtue shrines and speak the following words of power for that shrine:
    • Compassion - mu
    • Honesty - ahm
    • Honor - summ
    • Humility - lum
    • Justice - beh
    • Sacrifice - cah
    • Spirituality - om
    • Valor - ra
Players who are having trouble raising karma may wish to visit a virtue shrine and speak the appropriate word of power to make sure their karma is not locked. If a player has their karma locked, the action of "I honor thee" from other players will not cause the locked karma to raise. The karma must be unlocked for "I honor thee" to have an effect.

OSI: Taxidermy Kits

The following was posted to General Testing on the Ultima Online Web site:

Taxidermy Kits

Taxidermy Kits will allow players to use corpses of certain creatures to create trophy deeds, which can be used in houses to generate a wall-mounted trophy.

Taxidermy Kits will be found on NPC Tanners, usually found within "leather and hide" shops in towns. Only master and above carpenters can use the kit itself, as those without master or grandmaster status in carpentry will be unable to figure out the kit's workings.

A master carpenter is defined by UO as a player with 90.1 or above base carpentry skill (base skill, visible by clicking "show real" in the skill window).

The player will need the following items to create a trophy:
  • Taxidermy Kit
  • 10 boards
  • corpse of either:
    • Orc
    • Gorilla
    • Troll
    • Brown Bear
    • Polar Bear
    • Great Hart
    • Big Fish (note that "big fish" that have been stacked with other fish will not be useable by the taxidermy kit)
When the player with enough carpentry skill and materials listed above uses the taxidermy kit, they will get a targeting cursor. This cursor is targeted on the corpse of the creature (or big fish) intended to be the trophy. Thus, the player will need to be at the corpse of one of these creatures to successfully use the taxidermy kit. The taxidermy kit will disappear upon successful use and a deed for a trophy will be placed in the player's pack.

The player attempting to place the trophy will need to be a owner or co-owner of the house. The trophy will need to be locked down to prevent decay or other players taking it. Double clicking the trophy if it is not locked down will cause it to return to deed form in the player's backpack.

The Battle for Dawn (Felucca)

The following OOC message from King Desmond of Dawn was relayed to the Dawn Town Cryer earlier yesterday:

There will be a consentual PvP (player vs. player) event in Dawn from 8:30pm PST until 11pm PST on the evening of Friday, January 26th, as part of the current revolution quest. This event is 100% voluntary. Those who do not wish to participate should not enter Dawn during those hours next Friday.

There will be a few war declarations made between Dawn and other participating guilds this week. Do NOT attack anyone orange to you until the event Friday night, as the war declarations are SOLELY for Friday night's event so everyone can fight without being concerned about murder counts. So far, the following guilds will likely be involved:

Savage Truth
Fairhaven Village
The Dark Tower

Rules for the Event:

1. You must be on one of the guildstones mentioned above to participate. Anyone else is subject to receiving murder counts.

2. There will be 3 sides competing for control of Dawn Tower. In order to identify who is on what side, those supporting King Desmond should wear all black; those supporting the Royal Court should wear all blue; those supporting the Royal Guard should wear all red.

3. Once you are killed, you are out of the battle. You can retrieve your stuff from your corpse, but leave your death robe on and do not return to the battle or assist anyone in any way.

4. There is NO LOOTING. However, also do not bring anything you can't afford to lose, as we can't control everyone's actions.

5. Do not come if you are concerned about losing fame or karma.

6. The group that is in control of Dawn Tower at 10pm PST wins. After 11pm PST the battle will be considered over and war declarations will be canceled.

7. The revolution quest will then conclude on Saturday evening.

Hope everyone has fun!

Gestures added to Third Dawn including Dancing!

The following was posted to UOSS:

Gestures added to Third Dawn including Dancing!

I think I have just died and gone to heaven. I just logged into the Third Dawn this morning to find that they have added a feature called Gestures. Among the 50+ things that you can now do are 4 different styles of Dancing. And when I say dancing I really mean dancing. They have modern dancing, tribal dancing, and two different kinds of folk dancing (including one that looks exactly like River Dancing). By clicking the Gesture button over and over you can get the same dance move to loop so that it looks very smooth.

The other gestures available are Walk, Walkstaff, Run, Runstaff, Idle1, Idle2, Fidget, Combatidle1h, Combatidle2h, AttackSlash1h, AttackBash1h, AttackPierce1h, AttackSlash2h, AttackBash2h, AttackPierce2h, Combatadvance, spell1, spell2, attackbow, attackcrossbow, gethit, die1, die2, block, punch, bow, salute, applaud, argue, argue2, argue3, blowkiss, formalbow (much fancier than normal bow), casual bow, cover ears, curtsey (another very fancy bow), folkdance (River Dancing), folkdance2, dance, tribaldance, foldarms, impatient, lecture, nod, point, armed salute, greet salute, unarmed salute, shakes head, enemy salute (*grins*), victory, victory2, wave, two hand wave, longdistance wave, and what.

Out of all of them, I have to say that the dancing ones are by far the coolest. But several others are very nice too, especially the Formal Bow and the Enemy Salute (visible method of flipping someone off by using both arms).

Baja Miner Uprising on Napa

While mining in the local mountains, disgruntled down and out Baja miners came across a shard gate, transferring them into the picturesque land of Napa. Instead of soaking up the atmosphere and sampling the local vintages, the miners used this opportunity to protest for rock splitters the Napa Shard over. Stratics Napa Valley Reporter Pelle Svanslos reported on the grisly situation:

Dear Readers,

I have to warn you about the increasing danger of going to Felucca these days. Especially the city of Britain. As I make my way through the streets I'm almost trampeled on a daily basis by the strange colored warhorses of faction members as run around looking like they have important business to take care of.

At the bank I have to constantly look over my shoulder for the myriad of thieves just waiting to snoop my pack and now...now it gets worse.

A band of miners from a town called Baja (I had never heard of it, but they assured me it was real) were protesting their memebers being murdered at the hands of the PKs.

I tried to get the guards to stop this nonsense...

...but as we know the guards aren't so smart.

Once again it was up to the citizens to clean this town up.

So, just as I was saying: "Can't we all get along" off they ran. North towards the graveyard. With a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach I ran after them. I wasn't sure what they were doing yet, but I followed diligently. As a news reporter I knew I wanted to be in on this story.

A crowd had gathered previously, some of them looking like they were spoiling for a fight. They hung back watching to see where the miners would go and when we arrived in the graveyard they loitered restlessly.

The miners started protesting about PKs and some of them lamented the loss of their favorite packie. They wanted to know, who among this group, was the culprit of this lower than low crime of horse killing.

Just about everyone stepped forward with a gleam in their eye and a sharp blade in hand. And so...the inevitable happened. The miners attacked and were killed one by one. Some of them begged for their lives by offering information only a miner would know...

...but it wasn't enough. Soon the ground was littered with dead bodies and pickaxes.

I didn't know these poor souls very long, but I felt as if I understood their rage and pain. They just wanted the simple life of hacking away at rocks day in and day out. Not asking for much, just to be left alone with their ore. These simple folk wanted what the rest of us do...to get along with our neighbors.

I ask you, is that so wrong?

Unfortunately, as I started to leave the graveyard with a heavy heart those jerks all attacked me!

So, I whipped out my katana and dropped them on the spot. 5 vs 1. They took off 1 hp. I think I found my new sig.

So, I say if the Baja miners was to perticipate in mass suicide...I'll be there to lend a helping hand.

The Ball

I had a great time last night! It was so wonderful to see so many people and meet new friends. Congratulations to Kita for doing an awesome job! *claps* And thanks to Pasque and Washburn for bartending. I think this is the longest party I've ever attended. I went to bed about 11:30 or midnight and it was still going!

Here's a quick painting I made. Notice [Seer] Eliar has joined the band. Perhaps she's given up Town Criers for Musicians? *winks*

Taxidermy Kits

The following was posted on UOSS:

Taxidermy Kits

It looks like we have found out what Big Fish are used for. On the Volunteer shard, Tanner NPCs are now selling Taxidermy Kits. These kits are used to make mounted wall trophies.

You must have at least 90.1 Carpentry to buy and use the kits. The one I purchased was around 83K, but I saw one in Britain that cost over 100K, so the price obviously fluctuates.

To make a Trophy, you need the Taxidermy Kit, 10 boards or logs, and the corpse of what you wish to mount must be nearby. You double click the Kit, target the corpse and a deed for the trophy is placed in your backpack. The Kit is one use only, and is destroyed after you use it.

I didnt have enough money to buy a house on the Volunteer Shard to actually try placing the trophy. However, I heard from Iome, who tells me that once you place a trophy, you can "re-deed" it by double clicking on it, so you can move it to another location.

I made a "stag trophy" deed from a dead Great Heart. I dont know what other animals are available, but Pug of Crydee posted the following photo of the available trophies in the curent UO artwork:

My thanks go out to Carpent, SugarRush and Rush for their help in obtaining the funds on the Volunteer Shard to purchase the kit. Also thanks to all the posters on the UOSS Carpentry and Fishing boards for their information.

The following was also relayed from the Dawn Town Cryer on the evening of the 20th:

Lord HellRazor, escorted by two Loyalists, arrived at Dawn Tower earlier today, delivering a message to the Royal Court and the Royal Guard from King Desmond. Duchess Wildstar accepted the parchment, which read:
Traitors of Dawn:

Thrice have I attempted to reason with thee, and thrice have you sought my life. Therefore the time for talk is over.

Thou and thy ilk have seven days hence to leave Dawn in peace, never to return. After that time, my army shall march upon Dawn, and all those who remain will swear fealty to the crown or die. This I swear.

Death to all conspirators and traitors of Dawn!

Desmond Cross
(Affixed with the Royal Seal)

Posted by Thellaren at 1:59 AM

From the Journal of Brother Antos

The following was taken from the Dawn Town Cryer:

From the Journal of Brother Antos, Arch Bishop of Dawn:
The realm is in an awful state. King Desmond, Queen Hayloh, and young Prince Riain live in exile, unable to return to Dawn for fear of their very lives. Those who remain in Dawn have split into three factions...those still loyal to the King (mostly made up of the Knights of the Order of the Blue Rose); those who follow the Royal Court (currently led by Duchess Wildstar and Countess Vixen), who believe that King Desmond is under some spell of the Dark Tower; and the Royal Guard, who appear to be preparing a military takeover of the kingdom. Yet none of them know the truth, nor will they listen!

I am one of the last of the original citizens of Dawn. These ancient eyes saw the building of Dawn and its sister city Wind, and the rise and fall of Exodus, over 300 years ago. Time moved differently in the Ethereal Void; some say it moved not at all. So when Dawn's magical experiments saw our realm trapped in the Void, time stood still for us for 3 centuries.

But we were not immortal. For once Desmond Cross of the Guardians of Virtue found the Blackrock Orb and freed us from our timeless prison, the years began to catch up with us at an accelerated rate. The Dawn Council of Elders, one by one, passed from this life, and now only I retain their secrets.

The Council of Elders, in their wisdom, knew that Desmond Cross was the Warrior Poet of ancient prophecy, he who was destined to one day lead Dawn to victory during its darkest hour. And so, they chose Desmond, a humble bard, to be the first King of Dawn. But they chose him for another task as well, one not even known to Desmond himself.

For you see, Dawn was a city of magic, magic that permated its very soil; magic fueled by the undying love of its citizens, and brought to razor-sharp focus within its rulers, the Council of Elders. But when Dawn was freed, and the Council began to wither and fade, it was feared that the magic that was Dawn might be lost forever.

And so, when Desmond was made king, the Dawn Council of Elders passed their portion of the Ether to him, and a mystical bond was formed between he, his land, and his people...an unending circle, a whole stronger than the sum of its parts.

I was tasked by the Council to one day reveal this sacred bond to King Desmond, that he might in turn one day pass the magic to young Prince Riain. But now it seems as if that day may never be.

Dawn has suffered too many blows as of late. When Lord British and his mages cast the spell that tore Trammel from Felucca, and handed Felucca to Minax, the land itself screamed in aguish; Desmond grew terribly ill, forced to rest in seclusion for months. And yet, Dawn remained, its magic weakened but restrengthened by the love of its people. But now...now...

Whatever evil that infects King Desmond is now beginning to affect, to a lesser degree, the citizenry. The hatred, the bloodlust, the thirst for power grows like a cancer, and is reaching a fever pitch. Chaos reigns in Dawn this day, and those who would murder their king in their madness don't even realize that doing so would be to kill themselves as well...for if the Bond is severed at any link, the kingdom itself shall surely die.

I have delivered this news to both Lady Wildstar and the Dawn Royal Guard, but both factions ready for war. Even now, King Desmond masses an army to march on Dawn, and I fear the three factions are about to collide in a war that may very well rip the kingdom apart.

I must continue in my efforts. I must make them see!

Brother Antos
Arch Bishop of Dawn

Last Man Standing Contest (Trammel)

I read the following posted by Ursula on the Golden Brew Board:

Last night we heard that there was a Last Man Standing Contest out at the Skara Brae Fairgrounds. When we heard that our own Beaker and Washburn had entered, Pasque and I rushed out to cheer them on.

What the contest is, is about 4 contestants stand in the fenced area of the fairgrounds, then Seer Eliar and Elder Takara make all sorts of nasty monsters appear. Whoever survives the ordeal wins the round. Washburn made it to the finals (yeah!) but was the second to die.

The Last Man Standing contests are random, but they did say there would be more scheduled.

The following was just added to FYI on the Ultima Online Web site:

Veteran Rewards Release Schedule

In an effort to provide optimal support for all shards as we release Veteran Rewards, we have tentatively rescheduled their release. We are currently targeting to release 12+ and 24+ month veteran rewards to all remaining shards following their Wednesday, January 24th maintenance period. Veteran rewards for these accounts will be activated on the Siege Perilous shard following its Friday, January 26th maintenance period.

Important! Veteran rewards are distributed by account, not character. You are granted a total number of rewards to be divided among characters on your account. If you do not normally play on a shard, you should not choose to accept rewards on that shard. Veteran rewards mistakenly chosen on the wrong shard will not, under any circumstances, be replaced or transferred.

To speed resolution of any support-related issues with Veteran Rewards, we recommend that you contact the Account Support department with any questions about account age discrepancies at uobilling@uo.com. Non-account related Veteran Rewards issues should be directed to uorewards@uo.com.

OSI: House Decoration Tool

The following was just added to General Testing on the Ultima Online Web site:

House Decoration Tool

Players will be able to use a House Decoration Tool to assist them with the decoration of their houses within UO. The tool has the following abilities:
  • The tool will be sold on Architect NPC's
  • Has the ability to turn certain objects to face south-to-east, or east-to-south. An example of an object that is able to be turned would be a wall clock. Not all objects can be turned.
  • Has the ability to raise or lower certain objects, thus allowing for items such as the wall clock to be "hung" on a wall. Not all objects can be raised or lowered.
The tool itself operates in the following manner:
  • The player using the tool must be the owner or a co-owner of the house where the tool will be used.
  • The player must actually be in the house to use the tool.
  • When the player double clicks the tool, targeting the tool with the target cursor will bring up a menu. The menu choices are "turn", "up", and "down".
  • Upon selecting turn, up, or down, the player will be able to target an item in the house to apply that effect.
  • The player can either double click the tool again and then the house object to apply the last movement style chosen on the tool, or the player can use the target cursor on the tool itself to choose another movement style (such as selecting down instead of up).
The house objects being moved must be locked down, and will remain locked down during the Decoration Tool movement process.

  • Town areas to choose will appear on each page as possible destinations on that facet.
  • Note that the town closest to the gate will be it's representing town, as the gates themselves are not actually within the town limits in many cases.
Moonstone functionality will not change. No new kinds of moonstones will be added.

Martial Law Declared in Dawn

The following flyer was found posted in and around the Kingdom of Dawn:

Gentle Ladies and Lords of the Realm,

There is a plot afoot within the Royal Court to overthrow the Crown. One of the ringleaders, Lady Arrianna, has been taken into custody. The other ringleader, Countess Vixen, is yet at large. At this time, it is unknown who the other conspirators are, although it is known that members of the knighthood and the mystic order are among them.

Vixen continues to attempt to gain supporters under the pretense of some "mental instability" which is supposedly affecting me as a result of a bracelet given to me by the late Na-Krul of the Dark Tower. And yet here I stand, having broken no laws of Dawn, but having been attacked by Vixen and her cronies without provocation on three separate occasions this eve. And if this so-called "madness" is truly the reason for her treasonous acts, why then does she turn against her queen as well? This business with the bracelet is but a smokescreen to hide her true purpose...to overthrow the crown and seize control of the kingdom.

A state of martial law is hereby declared in Dawn. Countess Vixen is to be considered "kill on sight" as an enemy of the realm until further notice. Citizens are to remain indoors and obey any curfews set by the Royal Guard. Until the conspirators are identified and this rebellion brought low, take caution.

The Queen and I continue to rule the realm from an hidden location. In the coming days I shall gather those who remain loyal to their king and queen that we may root out these mutineers and reclaim the palace.

A new home for Mages.. and friends

I read the following today at UO Journal:

As the fog settled over the castle a dark figure slipped over the walls into the courtyard. Shrouded in darkness and the dense fog, she silently crept across the grounds to the large stone building in the center of the walls.

The call of a small sparrow drifted across the fog from the shadowed figures lips. After a moment another figure floated over the walls of the castle and glided along the grass to the first figures side.

"Guards are light tonight," the second figure whispered.

"All the better for us, but keep your wits about you wizard, I don't want anything surprising me." The first figure whispered back.

"As m'lady says." The wizard said with a flourish and a bow.

"Oh cut that out you silly fop." She responded with a smile. "Now lets go, the guards are rotating."

The fog around the Savage Truth Tower was light and clung to the ground in the silent morning hours. The dew still lingering upon the flowers and trees.

On the steps of the Tower stood a man, garbed in a dark blue robe of fine cut, who kept looking to the horizon to note the sun's rising.

A patch of fog suddenly swirled, as if disturbed by the wind, only to have two figures, one woman, one man, appear in the center of the disturbance.

"You two are late," The man garbed in blue noted. "You had me worried for a while there."

With and impish grin the wizard retorted "You know me Tib, cant turn down a bit 'o fun can I?"

Giggling right along with the wizard the thief piped up, "Yes Tib, Zedd here is a lot of fun!"

Tiberious rolled his eyes skyward, "Zeddicus, one of these days your going to get yourself in trouble, now what did you two find?"

"The place is perfect. There have been no changes to the structure. Luck for us no, but we will have to change that later. The guards are light and have long rotations, will be very easy to overcome. All in all I would say that we could not ask for a better stronghold." The thief reported. "I would suggest that we do not dally to long on claiming the castle as our own. We should move inside the next few days."

"Then take it we shall. The Council of Mages need a more appropriate base to work with. Then the Sosarian Alliance shall take over Lord Brittish's Castle as our own. Yet we shall never swear our fealty to him."

Sage and Evocare talk about Changes to Factions

I read the following about factions on UOSS:

Sage and Evocare talk about Changes to Factions

Sage started the following thread on OSI's Faction Forum:
I would like to address some of the faction issues, and let everyone know where we stand on the issues currently. We are fully committed to making the faction system a strong system players can enjoy for the length of their careers. The following issues are currently being researched and fixed by the development team.
  • There was a problem where the system could possibly lose all of the data. The faction member might notice a title of unknown. This problem has had several safeguards put in to prevent it, and should it happen, a clean system is automatically put into place. A clean system means all the players will remain and keep their silver. However, the players would lose kill points, no towns would be occupied, no sigils would be corrupted or taken, no improvements would remain, and no officials would be elected. This should now happen very rarely, if ever.
  • Townstones on Catskills were not usable after having been cleaned under a faction wipe. This problem will no longer happen in the rare case that a faction would ever need to be wiped.
  • Townstones are losing track of hirelings. This will no longer happen.
  • The COM stronghold will be altered so that it has only one entrance.
  • Blue Players will no longer be able to enter strongholds, and a small area around the entrance.
  • Blue Players will no longer be able to cast spells into these same areas.
  • We are still researching the issue with elections in factions. Some factions are not able to hold elections, as the system is in a holding pattern.
Q: How are blues gonna join factions if they can't enter a stronghold?
A: There will be a recruitment stone outside of the faction stronghold now.

Q: Are you gonna just close off one side of the bridge of the CoM stronghold, or you gonna narrow the other remaining side also?
A: Basically, there will now be a chokepoint like all other faction strongholds.

That is our update so far. This by no means addresses everything we hope to improve with factions, but should give everyone an idea of our immediate concerns. We are still gathering your feedback on further improvements and I would like to thank you for all the good feedback so far.

In another thread, Evocare mentioned the following on faction town control extension:
Hi there, we're currently considering extending the guaranteed time (aka "grace period") a faction controls a town to six days (rather then the current 3 days). I'd like to know what your thoughts on this issue are, thanks!

Lum the Mad resigns

Lum the Mad famous online multiplayer game critique or infamous ranter, depending on your perspective posted the following resignation at his web site of the same name:

I'll keep this one short. Effective today, lumthemad.net is no longer run by Lum the Mad. I haven't decided yet whether I'll continue to write for the site - and for reasons that will become obvious, it's not really my decision to make.

You see, in the past month or so my real life job (you know, the one I do for a living) has taken a nose-dive from "Dilbert" straight into "Office Space". People who hang out in #lummies and hear my occasional profanity-laden diatribe have probably already figured out that I'm looking for a new job.

Well, I am. And for a few weeks now I've been in contact with a few of the gaming companies that we cover, trying to find out what my options are.

While no firm offer has been made by anyone at this point, I don't feel that ethically, I can continue to seek employment from the same people that we cover. In short, I have to choose what I want to do when I grow up.

This site has always been a hobby - a labor of love, and no one who "works" here has any pretention of it ever becoming a career. Recent events in the exciting world of gaming networks certainly prove this, if nothing else. Since I'm going to get another job anyway, it might as well be something besides making spam go faster.

Yet I've also tried, believe it or not, to hold to a basic ethical standard of conduct in what we write. I don't feel comfortable deciding what stories to follow up on at the same time as I seek employment from the same people.

So it's time to step back and let other voices be heard. I hope you allow them to challenge, infuriate, and occasionally amuse you in the same manner as you did I.

It's been a blast.

Lockdown Warning About Veteran Rewards

I read the following warning from Bosola on UOSS:

Lockdown Warning About Veteran Rewards

If you get a flaming head, LOCK it down. This is not clear in the latest updates info. I just spoke to a GM about it. Apparently, according to the GM unlocked flaming heads will decay "rather quickly." One thing is for sure: Flaming heads don't spout flame unless locked down. So if you dont' want to chance losing it, lock it down until further notice.

I assume the same holds true for banners.

OSI: Publish Update - Veteran Rewards

The following was just posted to FYI on the UO.com website:

Publish Update - Veteran Rewards

We have revised the target date to release Veteran Rewards to accounts 12+ and 24+ months or older on all non-Japanese shards. Veteran Rewards for these accounts will be activated on the shards on Monday, January 22nd (local server time). The Siege Perilous shard will be activated with the rewards following its regularly scheduled maintenance period on Friday, January 26th, barring any unforeseen downtime.

We are continuing to work to resolve the localization issue with the Japanese shards and will release a schedule for these shards once one has been determined.

For more information on the various types or rewards and qualifications for receiving those rewards, visit Testing for Next Update.

OSI: Veteran Reward window display

The following was posted to the FYI section of the Ultima Online web site:

Veteran Reward window display

Due to the numbers of players logging in to the various UO shards, this causes an excessive amount of veteran reward window "requests" to be placed upon the veteran reward system. The system is working, however. Players should get the veteran reward window to appear after waiting online for a few minutes. If you have not yet received the veteran reward window, please wait for a few moments and it should appear normally.

Gift at the Tower (Felucca)

"Citizens of Sosaria.

"I have had time to meditate upon my actions, and through my rash behavior, I have found a single ray of light. For both you and myself. With the death of Opalescense, I have stirred the rage in each of you. I hope this has reminded you what it is to be alive. I hope it has reminded you what can happen when you relax your guard. And I hope it has reminded you how precious life can be.

"I do not ask your forgiveness. I am not that foolish. But I will amend what I have done, in my own way. I have long been studying the possibility of duplication. The possibility of bringing the once dead, who have been impossible to reach in conventional manners, back to thise realm of the living. And this is what I shall do.

"Come to the Dark Tower. This very night at the hour of 9pm PST. There, shall a gift await you, my attempt to amend the rash actions of my quick temper. Do not come bearing hate, for you will not find me there."

Signed in equally careful writing,

"Ivy, Mistress of the Dark Tower"

OSI: Publish Update - Veteran Rewards

The following was just posted to FYI on the UO.com website:

Publish Update - Veteran Rewards

We are currently targeting to release the Veteran Rewards to accounts aged 36 months or older on all non-Japanese shards on Wednesday, January 17th. The rewards will be activated on these shards following their return from regularly scheduled maintenance. We are working to resolve a localization issue on the Japanese shards and will activate rewards to these shards on a separate schedule if necessary.

We will monitor the activated shards for any issues that may arise. We are tentatively scheduling to release Veteran Rewards to accounts 12+ and 24+ months of age or older (in addition to the 36+ month accounts) following regularly scheduled maintenance on Thursday, January 18th (local shard time). Shards which do not have scheduled Thursday morning maintenance will receive their rewards following maintenance on Friday, January 19th. As with the 36+ month activation, this schedule includes only non-Japanese shards.

Important! Veteran rewards are distributed by account, not character. You are granted a total number of rewards to be divided among any characters on your account. If you do not normally play on a shard, you SHOULD NOT choose to take rewards on that shard. Veteran rewards will not be transferred between shards.

Tales of the Alchemist, Episode 1

The Alchemist looked up from his mortar and pestle with a slowly spreading smile. After years of labor, he had finally been able to concoct a potion of poison with a much greater effect than any he had previously made. He stood up from his workbench and walked excitedly around the room mouthing exclamations of joy. He then sat back down, carefully poured the poison into a bottle, and began to gather his things as if to go outside.

Wanda the noblewoman looked anxiously up and down the street. She looked with disdain at the peasants and lower folk of the city of Trinsic. They still put their trust in the worthless paladins of Lord British. Had they not been defeated once by the Archlich Jou'nar? Had they not fallen as easily as the shopkeepers? When the diaspora to Trammel had come, Wanda's family, enamoured by the power of Lady Minax, had opted to stay behind and rule as a new class of nobles.

Now Wanda was hoping to find someone to escort her to the Island of Occlo. This was a test, she knew, of both her abilities and of the citizens of Felucca. The beast British, in his foolish brand of wisdom, had allowed no vigilante justice in the land of Trammel, so most highwaymen attacked travellers in that facet. The bigger danger in Felucca was apathy.

The alchemist walked warily through the streets of Trinsic. His thoughts were filled by the darkness of Felucca like an empty hole. A darkness that allowed him one thought: REVENGE. The nobles of Felucca must die. He saw one ahead, a haughty female of the species with thin cruel lips and a fancy dress. She looked him over and explained her quest, but before she could finish, the alchemist whispered, "I will take thee".

Quickly, then, they went to the Dyn Region, an island outside of Trinsic connected by a long bridge. An island unprotected by guards where, the alchemist had explained, his boat was moored. As soon as the bridge was out of sight, however, the alchemist struck. Quick stab of kryss, parry of shield. Wanda fought hard, but she was soon poisoned. This is it, then, she thought, I lose. The alchemist was soon standing over her corpse, hastily grabbing her backpack and looking for a place to hide. It seemed to him that the corpse was almost smiling.

Lord Slimely looked around the island. He quickly located the ghost of Wanda and was preparing to leave, when he saw a strange creature hiding in some bushes. Ahh, he thought, Wanda's murderer. With some curiousity he noted it was not human. He revealed himself to it in order to get a better look.

"You there," he hissed, " in the bushes. You can come out. I won't kill you."

The creature didn't move so Slimely intoned, "Wis Quas."

And he saw that it was something cloaked in an alchemist's robe. "An Ex Por," he spoke and the creature was frozen, unable to move. Slimely circled the thing and said, "You are a marshwiggle, I believe. I had no idea any of your race aspired to anything other than a life in the mud."

"You have done us quite a service, " he continued, "killing all of our precious nobles. How many have you killed? One hundred? Two hundred? More? And do you know what happens to all of those poor dead Feluccan nobles?"

Slimely paused now for dramatic affect. "Why, they become liches in service of the Lady Minax. It was such a perfect plan, you see. Kill nobles in Trammel and the beast British loses a few, kill nobles in Felucca and Her Ladyship gains a few. All the while creating a larger criminal class with more resources at their disposal. I must say, I rather liked the plan."

The alchemist could only stare in horror.

But now Slimely looked irritated. "But the beast British is on to us and has concocted a scheme to guard the nobles of both facets and regain their loyalty. It will fail, of course."

"Lies, all lies," the alchemist was finally able to choke out. "I killed them. They are gone. They cannot serve you."

Lord Slimely looked amused. "Of course I lie, but I don't lie all the time." He smirked and vanished.

Opalescense Dies, A Mistress Proclaimed

Zeminar asked Opalescense to step outside the Dawn Mage Tower with him. Once they were out of earshot, he opened a gate and shoved her through. The Dark Tower loomed over them. He forced her inside and chained her to the malevolent stone housed in the back room.

Ivy entered the Tower, and saw her new prize sleeping in the darkness. She smiled to herself. This would work out well. She would keep Opalescense alive, and Mrrshan would remain in the Tower.

As the night progressed Ivy grew irritable. Zeminar appeared and challenged her authority. In a fit of rage, Ivy took out her dagger and beheaded the sleeping Opalescense, tossing her head at the feet of those gathered there. She then went to the roof and stood upon the pentagram to await what she knew was coming.

And death came to her upon the roof. While in the nether realm, Ivy bound Opalescense's spirit there. She would have her revenge upon the Quest Knight.

Ivy was brought back to the living realm and the Tower was there to comfort her, always offering it's promise of forgetfulness. And as she watched, her pin morphed on her shirt. The Tower itself had proclaimed her it's new Mistress.

An attached announcement from Lady Ivy:

The deed is done. The Quest Knight, Opalescense, the thief who disturbed Na-Krul's rest, is dead. Her debt to this world has been paid. She got only what she deserved for the trouble she has brought upon this land. Because of this accursed "Knight of Compassion" an undead plague has been unleashed. Those she brought torment to now have her soul to keep them company.

Lady Ivy
Mistress of the Dark Tower

The Resurrection and Departure of Na-Krul

Last eve we bid a *coughs* sad farewell to our *coughs again* beloved Na-Krul.

Through the use of a more powerful resurrection spell, discovered in some of the most ancient of the Dark Tower Library's tomes, Dipree, Sauron, and myself summoned forth and raised the spirit of our now former *ahem* Master. Our original intent in these actions was to have him close the accursed Well of Souls he and the former Master Xander had created and quiet the unrestful dead that keep pouring forth from it.

Our request met with his ridicule. Tis of little matter, I shall find a way to rid us all of that monstrosity. Instead, Na-Krul revealed that he is travelling on to another realm at the beckoning of... the Guardian.

For all who missed this event, I have had some painters put their paintings on display on the following sky page:

Mage Tower Library - Now located in Trammel

Posted: Jan 14, 2001
Event: A Great event transpired tonight, our own Nekkar journeyed to the Felucca Mage Tower. His goal was to retrieve a copy of each of the books found therein. These books were given to one of the many librarians to inscribe onto new parchment. After this tedious job was complete, Nekkar traveled back to the Mage Tower Trammel. We are proud to say that each book now rests within the walls of our new tower. Feel free to come and visit the tower and read each of these original works.

Opalescense and the Undead....

Opalescense arrived at the Dawn Tower a little early and was able to watch as the room became more and more crowed with members from the Kingdom of Dawn (DWN), Legion of the Emerald Sashes (E/S), and others. At the prescribed time, Opal started to speak and asked for suggestions on what to do with Na-Krul's remains. Those in the group suggested that they be buried in holy ground with a strong binding spell to keep the remains buried. As this was being discussed, Arwyn Blackheart of the Dark Tower showed up poisoned and warned us of an approaching undead group. What was strange about this, is that Arwyn appeared to be scared and nervous. That is highly unusual for him. We continued to discuss the matter and members of Dark Tower and a small but determined group of undead showed up. A chaotic battle ensued outside the tower, with the undead repeatedly attacking Opal and members of Dark Tower. Near the end of the battle, Arwyn reappeared and begged us to come with him to the Dark Tower. There he explained that they at Dark Tower needed the remains to ressurection Na-Krul, so Na-Krul could seal the Well of Souls. Opal gave the remains to him. A few minutes later, the spirit of Na-Krul appeared. The spirt spoken of his ressurction and about the Well of Souls. Dori of E/S and I agreed that we would help with the ressurction of Na-Krul to rid the realm of the Well of Souls. The ressurction of Na-Krul and the sealing of the Well of Souls will take place at the Dark Tower on Sunday at 8 PM PST.

Revelations of the Dead

Revelations of the Dead

Chaos erupted as the streets and lands of Dawn swelled with the hatred and opposition of many. The meeting had taken place, and Opal, well guarded, brought forth the wicked, cursed remains of Na-Krul. Tempers flared as the bitter resentment emanating from the bones filled the room, filling minds with ambition and hatred that had consumed the land years before in a bloody onslaught of brother versus brother. What would become of the remains? How would this foul annoyance of disease upon the land be quelled? The prophecy came to truth, as a band of undead zombies filled the streets of Dawn, yearning and feeding off their rage, questing for the bones stolen from them by the blasphemous quest knight of compassion. These tortured souls, only wishing once again a peaceful and eternal rest knowing Na-Krul lies bound within the land of death, a right stolen from them when his remains were bitterly removed from his well-guarded tomb in Khaldun, again fell to the anguish of slaughter. One by one they fell, splattering to the earth in a heap of decaying flesh only to rise again and lurch towards Opal, to just fall again, and again. Finally, in the midst of all the chaos, and after quelling the rebellion amongst the meeting, in a resolute to quell the wicked curse upon the land Arwyn emerged and lead the bewildered Quest Knight to the Dark Tower. There it was decided upon that to vanquish this wrongdoing upon the land, it was Na-Krul who was needed. In his wisdom and in his creation of the Well of Souls, only he could hold the knowledge to contain his own artifact of torment. Resentfully and with a grimace of disgust, Opal slowly handed the Pouch that contained Na-Kruls remains to Arwyn, where in which, the prophecy of the voice came to a stunning end. Slowly and carefully the bag was placed upon the Great Pentacle, and once again, the dead came to spread their wails of distaste for the mortal intervention. As their cries of anger and frustration echoed throughout the Tower halls, slowly, the same foul odor, the same thick, black mist of hatred consumed all on top the great pentacle. Opal had recognized this presence before when she had unwillingly let loose this fowl curse upon Sosaria, opening the thick, cemented casket of Na-Krul and retrieving what laid within. The scar upon her hand throbbed, pulsating and sweating as it did back in Khaldun. Her face clenched with remorse, and finally, the thick, black swirling mist took shape. It was the soul of Na-Krul, standing before her, his very malevolence piercing into the souls of those before him.

And so it has been decided. On the eve of Sunday, January 14th, at the stroke of 8:00 p.m. pacific Na-Krul shall rise again into the realm of the living. All those that wish to bare witness to this event, gather at the Felucca Dark Tower at this time, relinquish your minds and purify your hearts in witness of such a divination. Great futures behold as the once and future King returns to rule. I urge all to comeSeers of old, Golden Knight, Dawnite, enemy and friend alike. Come and meet your former lord in a new light, and a new time. Tis rumored he is to be leaving this realm; come and hear his words of revelationand remorse. Gates shall be provided from both Felucca and Trammel, within the Castle of Lord British at the stroke of 7:45 p.m., pacific.

(The Dark Tower departs for a new branch of introduction on Siege Perilous. Na-Krul, as well as few others depart the world of Baja, and wish to say their good-byes to the community that fought, cried, cursed, and befriended them through their lives on Baja. Please show and wave them goodbye.)

This Evening:

This evening at 7:00pm PST the Order of Leonine, Golden Knights and the Mage Tower are uniting steel with paper on a high adventure into the depths of one of the many dungeons of the land. They hope to meet a lot of new friends as everyone is invited to experience this escapade.

Petrus, a Golden Knight is going to mark a rune to each dungeon and leave the runes blank. "A rune will then be picked out of a bag at random", says Ursula, as she helped Finlay restock the counter with booze. "Everyone will meet at the Golden Brew," she continued, "and hopefully their gold will be given to Finlay after everything is said and done" Finlay is without a doubt the most experienced, friendly and fun to watch bartender in Trammel. The Golden Brew is proud to have him.

OSI: Sonoma Rewards Activation

The following was posted to FYI on the Ultima Online web site:

Sonoma Rewards Activation

The Veteran Rewards system will be active on the Sonoma shard following its Saturday morning maintenance. At that time, eligible players will again be able to chose rewards. Also, the issue with regards to AR and the veteran rewards will be resolved at that time.

Please note that rewards taken on the Sonoma shard will count against the total rewards you can take. If you do not play on the Sonoma shard, you should not choose rewards on that shard as any rewards you do take cannot be transfered to your characters on the shard(s) you do play on.

OSI: Sonoma Veteran Rewards Update

The following was posted to FYI on the Ultima Online web site:

Sonoma Veteran Rewards Update

We have resolved the issues affecting Veteran Rewards on the Sonoma shard, and will be reactivating the rewards system. However, it is possible that during a brief period before rewards were deactivated, some players may have had the opportunity to receive more veteran rewards than they should have.

While we do have extensive tracking systems in place for Veteran Rewards, the issues that affected the Sonoma shard also affected the tracking systems, rendering the data from that short time period unavailable. While it would be technically possible to remove the Veteran Rewards system entirely and delete all rewards, and/or identify many of the accounts that may have more than their fair share of rewards, the resource drain in doing so would not only hold the release of Veteran Rewards to the remaining servers, but would require resources currently committed to Ultima Online: Third Dawn - resulting in a delay of that product as well. Without this data, we are unable to determine the number of accounts that may have received extra rewards during this time period.

After discussing the delay of other systems and the Third Dawn product against the possibility that some players may have received additional rewards during a short period of time, we have determined that the best possible solution at this time is to continue forward with the Veteran Rewards publish. The issue that caused this bug in the rewards system has been resolved and should not affect future publishes to other shards. At this time, we will not be addressing the possible extra rewards, but will continue to schedule the release of Veteran Rewards to the remaining shards.

Tiberius captured by the Imperial Inquisition

Tiberius was summoned by Emperor Azalin the Lich and Empress Cymidei Fier, to answer for his teachings on the virtues. Before leaving his Temple, Tiberius was blessed by a mysterious Elven priest. When he arrived at the tower, Vladmir Threep brought Tiberius before the Empress. After a brief debate, the Empress became angry at the famous philosopher and placed a powerful geise upon him so that he could not leave Fier Tower until he and his knights could answer five diabolical riddles on the meaning of Evil. The Tiberian Knights responded quickly to aid Tiberius. Lead by Midian, Sir Ishop, Sir Vega, and Sir Grandmystic strived to free Tiberius from the yoke of Cymidei's sorcery. The Emperor and Tiberius debated for quite some time while the Knights carefully examined the riddles. Mandy, the Master of Arms, challenged Sir Ishop to duel Calvin II. Unfortunately, a murderous villain interfered with the completion of the duel. However, because Tiberius and his knights were able to complete the challenges put to them, Cymidei had no choice but to free the philosopher from the geise. As the spell was broken...night fell and the tower groaned with mysterious voices and ominous sounds...as if the dark deities themselves protested his release.

OSI: Veteran Rewards - Volunteer Update

The following was just posted to FYI on the UO.com website:

Veteran Rewards - Volunteer Update

The issues affecting account age and volunteer accounts has been resolved. Accounts that were at any time compensated for volunteer duties (Counselors, Seers, etc.) will not reflect the correct account age and be offered the appropriate veteran rewards. This change will resolve a similar issue with accounts paid for by Gametime coupons.

Men Are From Quake, Women Are From Ultima

The following article recently appeared in the New York Times, available on the web here (after a free site registration).

Top, Don Preisler; Marty Katz, both for The New York Times
A genre of role-playing Internet game with an emphasis on community is attracting many women, including from top, Heather Crouch of Austin, Tex., and Jeanni Hall of Odenton, Md.

Men Are From Quake, Women Are From Ultima

EVERY month or so Heather Crouch's husband, Si, used to bring home a new computer game, and she considered it one of her "wifely duties" to watch as he set it up and started killing monsters. After 15 minutes or so, she would walk away. But one day Si Crouch brought home a game called Ultima Online, and from the first moment Heather saw it, she was hooked.

That was three years ago. Since then, a new genre of multiplayer Internet game has been born, one that is drawing female players in surprising numbers to a pastime that had been dominated by men. The games are set in medieval towns with a knights-in- armor flavor, but characters are not limited to fighting, as in more traditional computer games. They can also chat, buy and sell items like food and weapons, run businesses or make friends and go exploring.

"What women are finding so interesting about these games is that they provide a sense of community and social structure that you don't see in other games," said Patricia Pizer, a lead designer at Turbine Entertainment Software, which developed and regularly updates the Microsoft game Asheron's Call.

In real life Heather Crouch is a 30-year- old stay-at-home mother of two in Austin, Tex. In Ultima Online, she is the leader of a merchants' association in which about 100 other players participate. "I've never been into hack and slash," she said. "It's the relationships that've kept me in."

Officials at the companies that make the three most popular games Ultima Online, from Origin Systems; Asheron's Call; and EverQuest, from Sony said they did not design the games with women in mind and have been surprised at the response. The game companies do not officially monitor sex ratios, and since male players can create female characters and vice versa, there is no accurate way to judge how many women and girls are playing. But based on the number of women who participate at fan sites, volunteer to become official guides within the games and attend real-life player gatherings, officials at the three game companies informally estimate that at least 20 to 30 percent of players are women.

A survey conducted last month by PC Data Online showed that slightly more women than men play online games and that women tend to prefer less violent games like gambling, card games and puzzles. Sean Wargo, a senior analyst at PC Data, said that 20 percent of the players of shoot-'em-up games are women, while 23 percent of the players of role-playing games are women. But Mr. Wargo said that the survey categories were broad and that he believed that the number of women playing the subset of role-playing games that includes Ultima Online, EverQuest and Asheron's Call may be larger.

Among the signs is a blossoming of women's fan sites. And in response to requests from female players, Asheron's Call endowed its characters with two new abilities: curtsying and wearing dresses, according to Dave Namerow, the online community manager at Turbine Entertainment. Female players enjoy hunting and fighting in the games, though many say they tire of those activities faster than men do. "There's only so many times you can kill the beast," remarked Kim Gonzalez, 30, an Asheron's Call player from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

Although the games are booming, with more than 600,000 people worldwide paying $10 a month to play, their appeal to women may be the most important aspect of their success. Computer gaming is a $7 billion annual business, but industry leaders have been keenly aware that half their potential market women and girls has been only partially tapped. "The gateway for getting women into gaming is going to be through these role-playing games," said Gordon Wrinn of Sony Online Entertainment, which produces EverQuest.

The games are alternate realities, available 24 hours a day, and the average player is logging on for at least 20 hours a week. Players each create a screen character, choosing its sex and profession and giving it a name, and they experience the game through those alter egos, which they control from their keyboards. Their characters can communicate with one another through typed messages.

While the characters in traditional computer games tend to be fighters, here players choose from a variety of professions tailor, chef, blacksmith, carpenter and then devote hours to building their skills and strengths. Characters can steal from and even kill one another, but they can also be law-abiding artisans or shop owners.

The rulebooks are sketchy, so experienced players often act as mentors to newcomers. "You're not competing necessarily against other people," said Carly Staehlin of Origin Systems. "You're all engaged in an experience together."

That sense of community can extend beyond the game into real life (in gamer lingo, RL). Romances and friendships born in the game sometimes cross over to the real world, and the formation of other meaningful relationships is common. Nancy Boone, 51, an EverQuest player from Corsicana, Tex., said she knew a lonely 13-year-old Canadian girl in the game who received long-distance help with her homework from adult players. And when an experienced EverQuest player recently died, a memorial service held within the game was "attended" by hundreds of people. "It takes your breath away," said Sharon Morris, 31, an EverQuest player from Bedford, England. "It really is a real community."

Women and men both hold leadership roles in the games, heading local governments, military alliances and other groups. What most distinguishes women players, game developers say, is that they use their imaginations to push the limits of the games, pioneering ingenious new kinds of player contacts. "There have been emergent behaviors from women that are really kind of fascinating," said Ms. Pizer, at Turbine. "Women are seeing openings for social interactions that the game designers didn't necessarily plan on."

Some characters played by women band together as informal "fashion police," taunting characters who are badly dressed. Other women team up to help new players by handing out gold pieces, weapons and advice.

Women have also started innovative businesses. Laurence Valette, 35, of Versailles, France, operates an interior design firm within Ultima Online. Like any real-life decorator, Ms. Valette's character tries to accommodate her clients' wishes, however odd they may be. When an evil character told her he wanted his tower to be "frightening, though not vulgar," she adopted a black-and-red palette and made judicious use of skulls as decorative elements.

Another female player founded a theater company in Ultima Online that has staged several full-length performances, including "A Christmas Carol" and "The Wizard of Oz," that are acted out by players' screen aliases. To move the performances along briskly, players don't type their lines in real time but rather paste them in advance into text boxes. Costumes and props are improvised from the limited items available in the game; Scrooge's tombstone, for example, was a stack of ingots. The plays have been successful, with up to 50 players logging on to watch. "It's virtual, but at the same time it's the real thing," said the director, Jeanni Hall, 32, of Odenton, Md. "The energy I commit to this is equal or more than I would commit to a real play."

Douglas Rushkoff, the author of several books on Internet culture, said that because women tend to be excluded from positions of power in real life, they are drawn to cybercommunities where they can make an impact. "These are games where women can be included and can sense that the world itself is conforming to their vision of it," he said.

It's a two-way equation. Not only do women alter the games; the experience of playing can change women's lives. Erinn Duce, 20, of Sacramento, Calif., works for a small nonprofit agency that helps disabled homeless people, but in EverQuest she plays the notorious Mistress Ezra, who is prone to looting and killing. Ms. Duce said she is shy by nature but that the freedom she feels in the game has changed her. "I've become more vocal, more outgoing," she said. "There's less stress in my life."

For Val Massey, the transformation was even more pronounced. Not long ago, Ms. Massey, who is 36 and lives in Austin, Tex., was in an abusive marriage and had no job, few skills and an ailing grandmother to care for. But, in Ultima Online, Ms. Massey played a successful businesswoman, a character she named Martha Stewart, who got rich selling box dinners and catering parties. Other players knew her by reputation and respected her. "It gave me a sense of self-worth," she said, "and the confidence to try to better my situation." Ms. Massey befriended a male player, first in the game, then in real life, and ultimately left her husband to marry him.

Experiences like those come as no surprise to Mark Pesce, creator of the Virtual Reality Modeling Language, or VRML, and author of "The Playful World." "We call them games," he said, "but it's actually a rehearsal for reality."
Raph Koster, formerly of OSI and UO, responded to the comment, "...the three most popular games - Ultima Online, from Origin Systems; Asheron's Call; and EverQuest, from Sony - said they did not design the games with women in mind and have been surprised at the response," in the Ultima Online eGroups mailing list, below.
Untrue! :P UO was most definitely designed with women in mind, by my wife, who was a designer on the team (one of the original three). In fact, we were disappointed to get as FEW as we did.

Mage Tower News (Trammel)

The following newsbits were recently posted to the Baja Mage Tower newspage:

The Golden Brew Players put on a great production of 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'. Here is a painting of the event.

The Mage Tower Stone Moves to it's New home Please visit the new home of the stone, The Trammel Mage Tower. A Grand gathering of the Mages of the Tower will take place on Friday January 12th at 9:00pm PST.

Our Guildmaster Nekkar has been seen lately with a shady looking person. I tried to talk with him tonight and he only looked at me and snickered. I'm afraid for the Tower. This is a dark time. One of our most trusted Friends! He is showing signs of stress and as if he has not had any rest in days. The worst part was when I called his name he just looked at me with a blank stare as if under some sort of control. His eyes, if you could have seen them..... It was unbearable. I did manage to get this quick painting done. I had to strain myself just to hear a few words from their conversation. But unfortunately I did not make out what they were saying. The Dark one was telling him something, he was whispering things to Nekkar.

Memorial for the Dead Dove Tavern

The Dead Dove Tavern was a long-time home to role-playing and events, as well as one of the few "Blessed" (enhanced by Ultima Online's Game Masters) player-buildings on Baja, but on December 26th, 2000 the "DDT" collapsed.

Seer Eliar appeared tonight near the Avalon Town Hall, east of the collapsed Dead Dove Tavern. Claude and Draco were nearby, and followed the Seer to the ruins. The area had been cleared up and a memorial statue stood in the tavern's place. Others soon arrived for the tribute, including Joseph, the owner of the fallen tavern and leader of the Rogue Brethren, as well as Tiare L'Roisto, it's last custodian.

The memorial statue is based around a large, beautiful golden dove, with two smaller doves flanking it's sides. When looking at the center of the memorial one can see:
A statue of a dove gold wrought in gold, its wings spread as it prepares itself for flight. -<>- "In Memory of the Dead Dove Tavern"

Good luck to Joseph and his Rogue Brethren, wherever their destinies may take them. You were the best thieves who ever stole a PK's recall reagents, masterful role-players, and most charming miscreants that ever graced our world.

[A fitting memorial for this chapter of the Dead Dove. *tips hat* -Hazard]

Interior Decorator [UO3D Alpha]

Noctalis.com's UO section posted the following observation concerning a soon-to-be-popular house decorating tool that's appeared in Ultima Online: Third Dawn:

Interior Decorator [UO3D Alpha]
  • Sold by architects for 9,000 gold.
  • Double-clicking the tool for the first time will allow you to choose one of three options; Turn, Up and Down.
  • Double-clicking the tool and targeting a locked-down item will allow you to affect the item with the selected option.
    • Turn The item will turn 90.
    • Up or Down The item will raise or lower one level. You will get a message if the item cannot raise any higher.
  • Using the tool and then targeting the tool will allow you to select a different option.
  • Anyone who has tried getting the facing right on chairs will really appreciate the turn option.
  • This item just made obsolete our (already out-of-date) Decorating Tips page.
  • Attempting to raise a locked-down house add-on (I tried a small forge) will get you the message That item is too heavy.

Kidnapped by the Shadow Imperium!

Opal patted Sparrow, her pet ostard a gift from Wraith, on the head as he strove to keep the pace she set through the forest. She was headed to the Golden Brew to see if she might relax a bit and watch the play the Golden Players were presenting.

"I promise, you can rest as soon as we are there...at least for a while," she urged the winded ostard, it's strides covering less distance then usual.

They arrived at the Golden Globe and Opal reigned Sparrow in. She tied him off in front of the Brew and, trying to stay unnoticed, made her way to the roof to see the play. The voice she had been hearing was still there, trying to persuade her to relinquish the remains to the Dark Tower.

The play was cancelled for the moment, due to some technical difficulties, so Opal went down to retrieve Sparrow. She mounted up, hoping to escape notice...but that did not happen. As she wheeled Sparrow around she saw a familiar face and nearly fell off of her mount. It was Kray.

She spoke to him, confiding in him what had been happening. And suddenly there was a commotion. Mrrshan, who had been at her side since hearing of her situation, was suddenly standing in front of her, brandishing his bardiche as if guarding her from something. She looked in the direction he was facing. The crowd was parting for a man dressed in black, wearing a single green sash. The Dread Lord Beldock.

At his approach, even Sparrow took a few steps backward.

"Give me the remains, Opal."

"I cannot."

"You will die if you do not relinquish them to the Dark Tower. The undead will hunt you until they have them, or you are dead. I ask you to give them to me... as man who once loved you. I rarely ask in public; I am asking you now in front of all these people, please."

Her cheeks flushed slightly at his words, and the world spun. All she could think was 'It's all a dream, let it all be a dream'. And at once her senses came back to her, all her memories and her thoughts were clear. No voice invaded her mind, and her purpose stood clear.

She leaned forward on Sparrow, and looked into Beldocks eyes.

"If you had ever really known me, you would know I cannot do what you ask," she said quietly.

"Very well. I wish you safety in your travels. Kal Ort Por." And he was gone. Sometime in the commotion, Kray had suggested she give the remains to Beldock, and had then disappeared. Wraith stood there. She was thankful there was a friendly face in the crowd. Even Mrrshan was exuding a hate so strong the scar on her hand throbbed slightly.

A cold sensation washed over the crowd as another being in black approached the area where she was standing. Azalin the Lich, of the Shadow Imperium. He was inquiring what was happening in her area. One of his subjects, Vladamir Threep, approached her.

"If you would, I should like to speak to you in private. Come."

The commotion in the crowd was making Sparrow nervous and Opal was feeling rather uncomfortable. So she followed into the gate he opened. As did Mrrshan.

They went inside the house and Vlad offered to help Opal in her endeavours to keep the remains of Na-Krul from those who would misuse them. After a time, she was allowed to leave. Mrrshan, however was ordered to guard her as he would Vlad. Something Opal found very odd, as Vlad was undead and served a lich. She went back to the Golden Brew, Mrsshan by her side, alert.

When they arrived, Mrrshan turned to scan the forest. Opal took this moment, and spurred Sparrow off into the forest. She heard Mrrshan curse behind her and Sparrow sprinted further and further away, leaving him behind. She needed time alone, too much was happening.

As she was finishing off a reaper, who was terrorizing some local homes, Mrrshan approached But something was wrong, his eyes were hollow. As the reaper fell, she felt a blow to the back of her head, caused by the haft of the bardiche in Mrrshan's hands.

When she awoke, it was to cold water being thrown in her face. Mrrshan was holding her arms. Azalin the Lich stood on one side of her, and the Lady Cymidei, formerly of the Temple of Athala stood on her other. They were searching through her bags. Her mind screamed, "No!" But to her relief, they could not open all of them. The voice reassured her that these creatures would not find the remains.

Cymidei smiled reassuringly at her and stroked her cheek with one hand. Mrrshan released her and headed off down the stairs of the tower they were now standing on. Cymidei firmly grabbed one of her arms.

She spoke of destroying Na-Krul's remains upon the Shrine of Spirtuality with the righteous fires that sprang from it. The voice, always present, kept distracting her from what the Lady was saying. Finally Azalin handed an amulet to Cymidei. She offered it to Opal, saying it would protect her from spiritual energies. The moment she took the amulet, the voice fell silent in her mind. And the Lady Cymidei released her.

Her mind was clouded with confusion and emotion from the happenings of the eve, and she fled to the one spot she considered safe in the world...her patch of flowers. She sat there for many hours, not a sound disturbing her, when she heard the steps of a mounted rider approaching. It was Mrrshan. She picked up her staff and fell into a defensive position.

They had an exchange and he ran off. She ran after him. The ring upon his hand was no longer gold, but black. She tried to get him to be rid of it, but as he tried to fling it into the ocean his eyes went hollow again. He refused. Now she knew there was something the matter. He wore the pin of the Shadow Imperium. Not knowing what else to do, she looked at the amulet Cymidei had given her. Taking it in her hand, she flung it at him.

"Return that to your... lord and lady." She said as she wheeled Sparrow around and whispered the words that would take her to one of the places she felt safe.

(I was amazed how much I wrote in the first one) Currently, I am winding up the last two chapters of Book 4 and already started on Chapter One of Book 5 since Girion was so kind as to give me a good couple of paragraphs to introduce him. *Chuckles*. If you liked the AD&D world and played the game you will enjoy this novel since it is similiar in approach.

So if you like this novel you can look forward to more exciting reading!

Hairstylists discovered in UO: Third Dawn

UO Stratics posted the following information about Ultima Online: Third Dawn's graphics. The original can be found here:

Hairstylists discovered in UO: Third Dawn

On the UO: Third Dawn Alpha shard you can find a new type of NPC called a hairstylist in some of the Alchemy shops. This vendor can change your hair for a mere 50.000 gold and/or give it a funky color for only 500.000 gold. Now I don't know about you, but half a million gold, just to do your hair, is outrageous in my humble opinion.

Please note that the third picture has been doctored, in-game you will have to pick which group of colors you want to see and then the corresponding list of colors will be displayed on the right side of the gump.

UO Third Dawn - Textures and Animations

UO Stratics posted the following information about Ultima Online: Third Dawn's graphics. The original can be found here:

UO Third Dawn - Textures and Animations

Whilst browsing the UO: Third Dawn Alpha files I stumbled upon a directory where all kinds of textures for items and characters are stored. It will take some imagination to take these "flat" pictures and imagine them in 3D, but it will give you a good idea of what the graphics of UO: Third Dawn look like. Here are some textures for your viewing pleasure.

I also found lots of animation files on the CD that determine how all creatures move. You can download an animation player called "The Granny Player" and see thread models of UO creatures move around. For those of you that do not have access to a UO: Third Dawn Alpha CD, here are some models of a Cyclops, Wyvern, Harpy, Kraken, Evil Mage, Orc Captain and Shadow Lord. Make sure you first download these files to your computer and then use the Granny Player to view them.

Weapons of Virtue Update

UO Stratics posted the following:

Weapons of Virtue Update

The Weapons of Virtue list has been updated with the latest findings. The supposed extra protection one gets from a "Elemental's Health" weapon has been confirmed as being false. None of the Virtue weapons offer any kind of protection other than doing more damage to certain types of monsters.

One of the more interesting and confirmed discoveries about virtue weapons is that each weapon has an opposing group; For instance the Repond weapons group has as an opposing group, undead. Carry silver, and Repond creatures do double damage to you. Carry Repond weapons and undead creatures do double damage to you, and so on. A lot of research still needs to be done on this, but at least now we know for sure that every Virtue weapon has a specific downside.

Golem at large

A group of black garbed soldiers cautiously approached the great marbled throne of the Emperor. Their leader swiftly fell to one knee. "Your highness we are here."

Azalin slowly lifted his gaze, his glowing green eyes searching the faces of the soldiers. Azalin clenched his black and green silk robes and rose slowly to his feet. "Excellent..." He replied "I have an urgent task to lay before you. "As you might know, I have constructed a golem. A magickal construct which was to be my prototype for an army of soulless soldiers. During the final phase of my experimentation. The insane mage, Lord Mordock caused a fire at my laboratory. The resulting fire caused the golem to become warped and twisted beyond control. Now the magicks that were used to create it, sustain it no matter what damage is done to it. It has the ability to regenerate and to cause chaos throughout my lands. I order you to defeat it and to bring me the soulstone that generates its power. When I am presented with the soul stone...you shall be rewarded."

The hunt begins 1/13/2000 at the center of the Hedge Maze (Trammel)

OSI: Veteran Rewards Update - Volunteer Accounts

The following was just posted to Shard Issues on the UO.com website:

Veteran Rewards Update - Volunteer Accounts

An issue relating to account age and volunteer accounts has been identified in the veteran rewards system and is currently being addressed. At this time, accounts that at any time were compensated for volunteer duties (Counselors, Seers, etc.) may not return the correct account age. We are currently working to resolve this issue and expect to have a fix updated in the next several days. However, these accounts may not reflect the correct account age following the release to the Sonoma shard on Monday, January 8th.

We expect the shard to remain internal for approximately one additional hour after it restarts from its maintenance. Should any issues arise that require us to keep the shard internal longer, we will post an update here.

Recent Faction News

The following was recently posted to UO Journal:

CoM looks for a new Stronghold
The CoM leadership is looking for a new stronghold this week. It seems that there are massive problems with the current stronghold in Magincia. The two bridges and the marine approaches along with two doors to protect have lead the leadership and many of the members to question the defensibility of their stronghold. A large number of members have even suggested that they will defect to another faction if the problem is not addressed quickly.

The CoM attempts to help Shadowlords
Last Tuesday the Shadowlords had a town sigil that they were holding. When Minax attacked the Shadowlords stronghold the CoM members came in behind Minax to pinch them between the two groups. The attempt was ruined when Shadowlords members attacked CoM members. All the CoM members were killed. CoM members vow never to help Shadowlords again.

Shadowlords grab Sigils Minax Attacks
The Shadowlords stole several town sigils from Minax and held them against multiple Minax attacks Wednesday night. The brave Shadowlords had a large force on late into Thursday morning defending the sigils. Lead by the murder archangel the Shadowlords fought off the strong Minax attacks. After the worst attack Minax left then returned five minutes later catching the Shadowlords members re-supplying. Minax also changed tactics and moved quickly into the attack. The sudden attack was just too much for the battle weary Shadowlords.

Minax once again owns all the Towns
As of Friday Minax once again has captured and held all the Town Sigils. With few attacks on the Minax Stronghold by any of the other factions Minax has had a relatively easy time of it the last couple days. Not only holding the Stronghold Minax has also fielded a twenty man quick reaction force that they are using very effectively in the Minax held towns. This reaction force responds in minutes. Always presided by spies the force moves with lighting efficiency killing all other faction members in its wake. Can Minax be stopped?

A plea for help!

Her breath came in short bursts as she ran across the open field. She could see her breath in the cold night's air. Looking behind her, she saw the mist was still moving through the trees, and she heard the moans of the risen sent to hunt her.

"This way Opal, run this way," came that voice again. She had noticed it that night in Khaldun when she had stepped up to the sarcophagus. A voice, kind and reassuring, yet insistant. "Fetch Arwyn" it had said as she peered down at Na-Krul's remains. Though she disobeyed the voice that night, tonight she did as it said.

Opal ran on through the night, paying no heed to where she was going, simply listening to the voice that had saved her from vengeful undead since leaving Khaldun.

"Here Opal, leave the bones with someone here, they cannot hurt you then, it will all be over. And others will not be hurt."

Opal looked up from where she was catching her breath. The Dark Tower loomed over her.

"No!" she shouted into the night.

At the sound of her voice a dozen undead began clawing their way out of the ground at her feet, and howls of spirits were heard echoing from within the Tower walls - The Well of Souls. She stumbled backwards, and tripped over a zombie, half climbed out of it's unholy grave.

Scrambling to stand up and escape the grasping undead, Opal felt the cold grips of the undead on her. Skeletons scratched her flesh where it could be found, the zombies left poisonous trails of their coagulated blood across her armor, then she heard something that caused her heart to freeze.

"Ahha ha ha ha" The ground in front of the steps to the Dark Tower split open and a corpse rose forth. Opal recognized it. The ancient lich! Ignoring all other things she was feeling at that moment, Opal turned and ran. She knew she could not defeat him alone, and she would not try such a foolish thing.

Fumbling with her runebook as she ran she found the rune she thought. 'Oh please, keepers of everything good, do not let the ether fail me now' She spoke the words of power.

And she was standing in front of the Temple of Virtues on Ocllo.

"Opal not here. Find Arwyn. Return the remains to him, and all this can end. No more suffering for the innocent, no more running for you. All will be well when the remains are returned to the Dark Tower."

Opal shook her head, trying to ignore the voice. It reminded her of the suffering of the innocent as the undead plagued the lands hunting for her. It did not taunt her, but reassured her again and again that if she were to hand the remains over to Arwyn of the Dark Tower, all would be well.

Opal quietly opened the doors to the Temple and made her way to the table where pen and paper were at for the use of the Knights.

By the light of a single candle, she scrawled a message, the same message again and again on multiple sheets:

Please, I need help. I have the remains of Na-Krul in my possession and each day since I have had them, I have been plagued by undead. While I can avoid members of the Dark Tower, I cannot avoid the vengeful beings from beyond, who spring from the very ground I walk over. Innocents are being hurt while those beasts search for me.

I do not know what to do, so I send this missive to all whom my faithful pigeons can reach. Please help me. I fear for my very soul in this. I need to meet with any who can make it to the Kingdom of Dawn's Mage Tower at 8pm PST on the night of Friday, the 12th. I send my apologies now to those of Dawn, but tis one of the few places I feel safer.

Quest Knight of Compassion
Going to the pigeon coup, she fastened the notes to multiple birds and set them off out the windows, hoping she could survive until then.

The Well of Souls

The Well of Souls

Screams of horror fill the dank, dark halls of Khaldun as yet another lifeless husk falls to the ground. The overwhelming undead, pouring forth through the ancient crypts angered that their eternal rest was disturbed by yet another band of weary adventurers. Wave after wave of zealots protrude from the dark mists floating ominously within the dungeon in search of those who dare trespass upon their unholy soil, those that would dare attempt the recovery of the scholar and priests remains entrusted to them years before. The voice had warned them about this. The dead, the jealous dead, they would not release the decomposed remains of Na-Krul; not without a fight. His bones rested with them now, and no mortal who breathed life would dare take that from them. Or so was thought. The tattered bones of Na-Krul, now missing from the fathomless pit of doom, taken by the so-called Quest Knight of Compassion. Fury, the rage of undeath, had now been released upon the world once again. The curse of the red death, stirred by an ancient power, an ancient voice of reassurance that had guaranteed the return of the herald. As long as the cursed bones remained within the grasps of the heretics, all would feel the cold, icy embrace of death

Thunder, clash, the whistling of the wind whipping through the dead grass as a waterfall of rain poured from the heavens. Sosaria had not seen such a storm for centuries. The earth virtually melted away as the rolling waves of mud filtered about, enchanted with the life of a monsoon. The coasts flooded as the titanic waves splashed ashore, eagerly displacing itself back into the deep, salty bay it new best at heart. All was not natural and all was not serene. A thick, black mist, darker than night and thicker than the clouds floating among the heavens crept slowly over the horizon south of Britain. Panic struck the sea-bound as the vital light and guidance of the lighthouses vanished, consumed by the thick, gloomy fog emanating from the swampland.

The storm had lasted only but a day, disappearing as quickly and wrathfully as the thick black fog, yet as mysteriously as it had appeared. Where had such a storm fathomed from, and what menacing darkness was at bay? At that same moment, the wails and screams of the dead hung in the air, their putrid aroma of death filtering itself throughout the realm. Drifting through the Kingdom of Dawn, and slowly creeping upon the populace of Avalon. What had disturbed their rest? Who had brought their curse upon the living? Unknown originals bit at the minds of all as this curse of death plagued the denizens of the realm.

Deep within the Tower of darkness, south of Britain, and just north of the swampland, the believed starting point of the decrepit curse, bubbled an evil so hot with hatred no man could survive the wrathful embrace of its fumes. A gagging smell overflowed the temple where which Na-Krul himself once spoke and preached. A temple founded upon the blood and torment of the innocents. The same innocents sacrificed to the very well of imprisonment that now fed the curse of death drifting throughout the land.

The well was founded upon the unholy reign of Dread Lord Xander, mentor to Na-Krul. Together, Na-Krul and Xander had fashioned the well, enchanting it, bestowing life upon it through the ritualistic feedings of the souls of innocents and murderous alike. Now, the once craving evil, the once dormant Well of Souls, has been awakened by an evil unimaginable. The captives of this plight, jealous of the living, and infuriated at the liberation of Na-Kruls corpse from their grasps now release their wrath upon the world for the sin of one. The one known only to them as the thief marked with the scent of hatred throbbing forth from the scar that singed and seared upon the cold casket Na-Kruls remains once dwelled. How can this evil be stopped, how can those tortured by the grievances of Na-Krul be released from an eternity of torment? Time shall tell, and until then, may the thief who disturbed their rest, the thief who robbed Na-Kruls cursed tomb of his remains, be weary of the curse of the red deaththey are searching for you.

(The Dark Tower is recruiting any and all that wish to participate in an upcoming event this Friday (January 12th) at 8 PM pacific. To participate, you must create a new character and name him with a name such as an undead warrior, or a tortured soul. Create this character with light or pale green skin. Skills are irrelevant. Na-Krul's Remains - Stolen!

The day had been a long one and was going to be even longer, Opal thought as she shouldered her pack and flipped through the pages of her rune book.

Running a finger down along the list of runes, she came across the one she sought The Dark Tower. Sighing, she recited the words of power that would bring her to that desolate spot.

In a swish of ether she was standing before the dark, massive structure of the Dark Tower. Even after all this time, after all the time the Tower had been 'hibernating', there was still something about this place that made her shrink back with a small feeling of fear in the pit of her stomach.

I am here for a purpose, she reminded herself, and looked around, taking in her surroundings. A female mage, named Danica, on an ostard stood outside with her, she smiled a malevolent smile at Opal.

Quickly making her way inside, Opal took notice of who was here to assist the Dark Tower on their venture to recover the scholar Na-Krul's remains from the tomb that was Khaldun. Former members of the Dark Tower, and of Scythe, a few faces she did not recognize, but two she did. Bub'ger of the Golden Knights, and Wraith - he wore his new Dawn pin proudly. Ignoring sneers from those who recognized her, she made her way to sit beside Wraith.

She had not been sitting there long when the door to the back room opened, and Arwyn stepped out. It was time.

Danica opened the gate outside and all stepped through. Before them was what Opal referred to as the 'back door' to Khaldun. Not the grand entrance that was at the other side of the tomb, but a hole in the side of the rock-face. One by one, each of this group climbed down into the hole.

After a chaotic trek through the first room, where cursed ones tried to halt their advance, Opal spoke.

"I know these tunnels." Perhaps that had been her first mistake.

Arwyn reigned in his horse. "Do you? Then lead us Quest Knight, for the glory of Na-Krul."

Making a slight face, Opal turned and headed off towards an area where she knew there to be tombs. And they followed. It was a bloody night none of them would soon forget. Many had not traveled this excavated site before and knew not what to expect. Zealots attacked from all sides, as well as the Cursed explorers who discovered this condemned place.

Never had Opal seen so many Zealots free roaming in this place. The entity that controlled this place must have known of her, or their, plan and sought to stop their sucess.

Finally the group came to a large room. Across the room was a large sarcophagus, and a decrepit form stood next to it. It's eyes, when it saw the mortals approaching flared with an unholy light and sounds unlike any heard on the earthly realm issued forth from it's decayed mouth.

Fire reigned down about them, lightning flashed, and poisonous claws raked at them. Opal stood forward, she did not come along to let people die on this foolish task, she was here to be sure they made it out of this pit of death alive. Willing all she could, she sought to bring the ancient lich's attention upon herself. He had felled perhaps two or three others, including Arwyn. She could not let him kill any others.

The ancient lich turned his unhallowed gaze upon her. Resisting the sudden urge to flee, she stood her ground, praying to all that was good that she could hold against this powerful and aged evil. Magical wave after magical wave washed over her, burning her and freezing her at the same time. Opening wounds that bled profusely. And just as the world started to dim, her swings becoming unsteady, she felt healing hands on her. Glancing only for a moment over her shoulder, she saw it was Wraith. And then there were others healing her as well.

She renewed her attacks against this blaphemous creature, as did others, and it did eventually fall into a pile of dust at their feet.

They regrouped, standing near the sarcophagus. There was something wrong. While others milled about, lost in the chaos of the moment, having lost comrades in that battle, Opal looked to the large stone coffin. There was an evil fog about it, swirling black in the air. As she looked around at the others, it appeared the could not see it. She stepped a bit closer and the scar upon her right hand, made so long ago by touching the Spear of Hatred, began to throb. She stepped back and tried to reorganize the group.

Once reorganized, she was once again set to lead, so she lead them away from the maleific sepulcher. After much exploration of the tunnelways they had finally been all over the upper level of this dreaded place. Arwyn had returned to their ranks and now lead them.

In time they returned to the place where she had felt that dark presence. Once more she said nothing. Arwyn stepped up to the sarcophagus and tried with all his might to open its lid. The lid did not move, it was almost as if there were no lid - as if it were simply a solid carved piece of stone. He sighed and stepped down from it, turning to the others he announced "This is not it." and they continued on.

Opal shook her head. Bub'ger and Wraith by her side, she decided she had had enough of this, and that if they sought death in this place there was nothing she could do to save them. You cannot save those who wish not to be saved. Bub'ger was going to stay. She and Wraith made their way back to the surface. Allowing Wraith to use her rune to get back to the safety of a town, Opal turned and faced the archway that returned to the tunnels of the tomb.

Na-Krul's remains were in there, and she must not let them find him. She stepped back inside and quickly made her way back to the sarcophagus. Stepping up the couple stairs to stand beside it, she felt a wave of hate wash over her. She nearly stumbled back, so great was it's force. Her hand throbbed. She pulled off her glove, and the black scar that ran across her palm was swollen and angry looking.

Considering her next action, she put her scarred hand on the lid of the sepulcher. Immediately, she knew what it was to feel Death's touch. All the warmth left her body as the aura of death surrounding the tomb burned her with it's cold. Setting her jaw against the pain she felt both in her hand and from the icy cold of Death seeking to take her life, she pushed against the lid. Pain flared hot along the scar on her hand and the darkness she could see around the coffin flared for a moment and flashed as it's seal broke. The lid slid away as if a dozen men were moving it.

The cold receded and the darkness seemed to loom away from her as she looked down into the coffin. There inside laid the skeleton of what was left of a once tattered man, a blood red sash, and a perfect skull. They were what was left of the once powerful sage and scholar Na-Krul, the prize those of the Dark Tower sought this eve, somewhere else in these very tunnels. They would not have them.

Opal took an empty bag out of her pack and carefully, but quickly, placed all of Na-Krul's remains inside of it, and put the bag in her pack. Looking around to be sure no one was watching, she hurriedly made her way back to the surface.

Avalon Public Library - Management Changes

Be it known that our dear Sire BlindHawk is the new caretaker of, and Librarian at, the Avalon Public Library. I'm very happy to leave the library in such good hands, and I rest asured he will take the library to unforseen hights of repute and glory!

As far as I know, it is the oldest standing player run library in the world, counting all shards. Many a library have I seen founded and dacayed, and one can wonder why the APL has lasted so long. Well, you can wonder, because I know why. Setting up a library and collecting the 28+ ingame book titles isn't all that difficult, and then what? Had it not been for the keen interest of you, my dear avalonians, and for your treasured contributions of fiction and memories, diaries and fantasies, the APL would prolly not be today. Among a number of player written titels, the library today hosts the two longest epic tales on the shard; Jack the Fool's story 'The Day Began With a Dream', and BlindHawk's 'Phoenix Rising - The return of a Son'. Both of star quality!

I never seem to remember the name of the founder of the libary, back in the misty times of creation, but I think a man called Elminster was involved. Always when I ask about this, Hazard knows the answer :-)

Honestly if feels a bit strange not being librarian any longer. I'v held the position for the city since early fall of '98, and it has come to define me in so many ways. I feel that being a very good reason in it self to step down, and try redefine myself, don't you? So what am I to do now? Well, after my housewarming, I will dig out my wandering staff, and take to the roads for a while, to see what has happened to the lands while I'v been busy in Avalon. I have not yet discovered the Trammel aspect of life, so maybe I go visit Lorcan Riain over there. meanwhile, leonardo and Ultan will still be busy in and about Avalon, and Celest will keep an eye out for evildoers from the GoA hut. Maybe even Antonio will manage to chop some lumer, who knows?

It has been an honour and a privilege to serve our fair city!

61st UOHoC Open House chat

The Ultima Online House of Commons (UO HoC) held it's sixty-first "UOHoC Open House chat" tonight. The topic was "Ultima Online Third Dawn", and the entire log is available here. Below are some quick snippets, the first is about Reds and the new lands (Ilshenar).

Glamdring - *BA_Barrackas* Can you elaborate on what was meant when you said that the new lands will have a "modified version of the Trammel rules". Modified in what way?

Alai - I probably said too much earlier regarding that. Basically, the new lands follow the Trammel ruleset in regards to player interaction. The CURRENT PLAN is to allow reds there however. Note, that this is all subject to change.
The next concerns Seers' Events.
Glamdring - And for those of you playing at home, here's the question that our seer developer is answering =)

Glamdring - *Watts* With the introduction of UO:3D I have read that content will be easily added due to the three dimensional client. Is there a plan in place for a monthly or bi-monthly "event" to take place?

Alai - "Yes"
And this third, quick snippet is about weapons.
Glamdring - *VO* Will there be any new weapons, if so what kind and will they work in the old lands ?

Tajima - There are three new weapons in Third Dawn, and you'll be able to use them in the "old" lands as well.

Runesabre - There will be new weapons. I don't want to give away all the surprises but there will be a new sword, fencing weapon and bow to name a few. We are still designing their attributes so I can't tell you how they compare with existing weapons just yet.

Information on New Animals!

I saw that uo.stratics.com posted something about the new animals.

...Several readers have submitted information about the ki-rin that has been discovered in the new land Ilshenar. This beast is also known in various card games and in AD&D. Various sources describe it as follows:
  • A type of unicorn, a winged horse with one horn on it's forehead.
  • A flaming or golden, good-aligned horse which protects from evil.
  • Mythical Japanese creatures. The male has a mane like a lion, their heads have unicorn type horns and their bodies have scales like a fish.
  • Japan[e]se and/or Taiwanese beer :).
  • It's an imaginary creature that is part horse and part dragon. The male is called "Ki", and the female is called "Rin". It is capable of flying, and sparks of lightning shoot out from its hooves. Kirin live for 1000 years and are considered good luck.

Happy New Year!

Last night quite a few of us gathered at the Golden Brew to celebrate the crossing over into the New Year. Ursula counted down to midnight, after which a toast was made and well-wishing passed all around. More and more people had joined the party in the last few minutes before midnight, and afterward they moved outside for dancing and general merriment. Soon enough, Ursula became inspired and conscripted Pat Factor X into Gating a group of party-goers from city to city. We travelled from Skara Brae to Jhelom to Britain and beyond.

Many people joined in with the spreading of good will, but one man in Papua tried to confound the festivities. Seemingly not one to join in with those of good cheer, he argued that it was just another day, like any holiday, and not a very exciting one at that. I felt the need to pause the travellers for a moment or two, pointing out to this man that celebrating the New Year, and in fact any holiday, is important for it's symbolism, if nothing else. It is a day not only to mark in our calendars, but in our hearts, as a time when we can make the conscious decisions to inspire ourselves and those surrounding us to help the world become a better place.

Let us take the time to consider that every New Year's transition is an opportunity for us to reflect: upon the wonderful friends we've made, our personal accomplishments, and our mutual achievements. Let us look forward into this New Year to renew hope in ourselves, and inspire ourselves for future success. We may all create better lives, starting today, right from the countdown to midnight and continuing forever forward.

Happy New Year, everyone. Happy New Millenium. Happy New Future.

The Remains of Na-Krul

The Remains of Na-Krul (an open letter to the realm)

With the library under re-construction and our lost tomes recovered, we once again can focus upon the recovery of our fallen lords remains. Upon our masters grave and putrid demise his remains were carted off to the deep and dank furrows beneath a vast labyrinth of chaos and destruction. No mortal of the light or dark was to ever disturb his malevolent rest with eternity, granting him the forever contemplation of his disposition in death within the vast ethereal plane of decomposition. Now, upon the commandment of the voice and the sacred guidance of his magnificence will we dare tread upon his unholy burial?

We must recover his remains, as it is vital to the recovery of our lost history and heritage. Upon this letter to the populace, I inscribe the wish of all sturdy and honorable adventurer to assist us in our journey to the dangerously deceitful and destructive lairs of Khaldun. Twas upon that eve of fate that Na-Krul was struck down that his charred, mutilated, and decaying remains were carried and laid to rest in the dungeon Khaldun, thought to be forever out of the reach of any distinguished mortal. But now, upon the re-discovery of the lost catacombs and crypts, his remains must once again take journey to the safety and peaceful resting-place of the Tower Halls

The Dark Tower is no more, as we have laid down our weapons in peace to further the enlightenment of our realm. Our only wish is the recovery of our heritage as Sosarians. Aid us in our tasks, and you shall all be rewarded. Ivy has assumed to take the position as keeper of the age-old stone of torment, forever pacifying its intents of destruction and I, too, Arwyn Blackheart, have seen the light in the voice of reassurance that guides us to our other-wise willing fate. To follow your inner voice, is to accept your destiny and chosen path of enlightenment. Help us recover our heritage.

If anyone so brave dares to assist our task, rally at the Dark Tower this Friday at 8 p.m. pacific, to journey to the deep depths of Khaldun and recover the decaying bones of our past.
