"Ultima 1 - A Legend Is Reborn" Interview

UOSS received a great tip from Orion and Llemnadrell about an interview at RPGdot with Telemachos, the Programmer at Peroxidea company which is creating a freeware remake of Ultima 1 called Ultima 1 - A Legend Is Reborn. Below is the start of the interview, conducted by garrett, and the entire interview can be found here. The official web site for
Ultima 1 - A Legend Is Reborn is here (along with a lot of really nice looking screenshots).

"Ultima 1 - A Legend Is Reborn" Interview

We had the chance to conduct an interview with Telemachos, programmer of the Ultima I - A Legend Is Reborn, a remake of the original Ultima I. For more information head over to the Peroxide website (http://www.peroxide.dk/ultima/) and be sure, to download the playable test build (http://www.peroxide.dk/ultima/release/u1_tech.):

RPGDot: Ultima 1 - A Legend Reborn; will it follow the original storyline of Ultima I, or where's the differences?

Telemachos: We decided to change the storyline some to make the game more RPG oriented rather than the hack'n'slash action game the original was. We'll do that by introducing alot of sub-quests, mainly given by NPC's you'll meet in taverns, on the streets of the towns, in the wilderness etc.

Also by popular demand we'll remove the space-part from the original where suddenly had to fly a space craft and shoot down aliens and replace that by a quest more true to the fantasy genre. The overall plot of the game remains unchanged though so the final battle shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

UO: 3D Alpha - The Guided Tour

Xena Dragon over at UOSS posted some more opinions about Ultima Online: Third Dawn, here. Below is the introductory paragraph.

UO: 3D Alpha - The Guided Tour

In the past days I've seen so many different things in the new land Ilshenar that it's hard to determine where to start. Let me take you by the hand, across the new lands, as we visit each of the eight shrine moongates and their surroundings. Note: not all dungeon, cave and passage entrances and exits that teleport you to another area of the map are working in this Alpha test. Therefor you may not be able to enter certain areas that are described below from all sides, sometimes only one of many ways to get into an area actually works. Ilshenar is roughly doughnut shaped, with a large hole in the middle and various forms of terrain scattered around.

Bash at the Brazen Mule

(early) New Year's Eve Bash (Saturday, 12/30/00, 7:00pst)

Come on down to the Brazen Mule Saturday night and eat, drink and dance the old year away! We'll drink to old friends gone and new ones we haven't met. Gates will be opening from the Scholar's Inn in Moonglow at 7:00 and every 15 minutes after. You can also find a rune in the top runebook at the Golden Brew. Formal attire is suggested, but you might want to have a weapon on hand on the off chance that brigands decide to crash the party.

Historic Building Decays

Tonight in Avalon, One of the Landmark Historic Buildings Decayed.

At Approximately 7:52 Eastern Daylight Time, on December the 26th 2000, The Last of the Dead Dove Tavern Rare Items were placed in GodLand by GM Starblade as a few of the Town Council stood by and watched with Overwhelming Emotions.

One of the Older Establishments in the City of Destiny, the Dead Dove has always been a part of the Rich History and Culture which set Her apart from the rest, and made Avalon one of the Most Unique places on Baja. Once the Home of the Rogue Bretheren, the Dove was often the In Place for the Thieves and Assassins to come together in a Neutral Place, and having set their differences aside, Consume Large Quantities of Ale and Ribs, and Pick each others pockets to pay for the next round.

I am hoping when I say that nothing of great value came up missing, for as soon as The Lady Jixxa let loose a flock of Pigeons, The Minister of Defense, and many others were promptly on the scene to ward off any who would profit from Our Loss. It does appear that very little can be done at the moment to restore the Dead Dove to Her former Glory, but this reporter has it on good authority that the Blessed Walls will remain standing, and no other placement will be made Until this situation is resolved.

Well folks, thats all for now. I will update this story as it unfolds.

The Freeborn Pressmen hope that all of you are having a happy and safe holiday season, and wish everyone well during Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Boxing Day, Winter Solstice, the Emperor's Birthday, and all those other December celebrations that we hold so dear.

Special holiday season tidbit: December 26, curiously, seems to actually be an obscure National Holiday in the USA known as "National Whiners Day"! Beware! :D

UO: Third Dawn - Alpha Test First Looks

Xena Dragon, over at UOSS, received a CD for Ultima Online: Third Dawn, and shared some first impressions with us. Below is a snippet, and the whole article is here:

UO: Third Dawn - Alpha Test First Looks

Since the Alpha Test Server was not on-line yet, I logged in on a regular shard to at least see what Britannia looks like now. The first thing you notice is that the 'old' and the 'new' art go along rather well. Objects in my house for instance all used the 'old' art, where my Avatar itself was presented with a 3D model. The grass and trees outside are made of new art too. One thing I immediately noticed is that spoken text appears over your body instead of over your head. Like I already noticed during the login sequence, all text and gumps fade in onto the screen, instead of just appearing, which looks rather nice. I ran back and forth a bit and even though the graphics card I tested on was below specs, the performance was good.

Paul Sage Interview

RPGVault was recently able to interview Paul "Sage" Sage, Lead Designer for Ultima Online. The entire interview can be read here. Below is their introduction to the interview.

Paul Sage Interview

Although other titles can claim the distinction of having reached the market earlier, there is no denying the fact that the release of Ultima Online in 1997 represents a very significant landmark in the history of computer gaming. Until that time, subscription-based persistent online worlds were regarded as a niche category, and a small one at that. As a result, the initial projections for UO were in the range of a few thousand players. It became clear during development that the level of interest was much greater than originally anticipated, and its ultimate success set the stage for the games that have followed, and for the explosive growth that is expected during the next few years.

Despite the subsequent release of other major titles and the impending arrival of quite a few more including a second online world set in an offshoot of the Ultima mythos, Ultima Online remains tremendously popular among online gamers around the world. A very important factor in this has been the game's ongoing development by the UO Live team, development that has produced a continuing stream of improvements and fixes as well as major expansions and updates. As we return to our occasional series of online world interviews, we're very happy to welcome Paul Sage, current Lead Designer on the UO Live team, who shares some very interesting thoughts with us.

Imanewbie: New Special Christmas Toon! (Part 2)

The following announcement was posted at Imanewbie:

New Special Christmas Toon! (Part 2): Santa's Revenge!

Last week Santa Claus suffered a serious setback to his plan to distribute presents to all the citizens of Britannia, due to the unwanted attention he received from the diabolical GM Grinch. Now as you all know, ImaNewbie is kind of a champion of the underdog so I just could not let it end there. This week ImaNewbie meets up with Santa and tries to help him replace his lost items. (hrmmm ... something familiar about that phrase ... Oh Yeah! GM standard reply #116 "Sorry but we cannot replace lost items." Anyway, you will find the latest in the 'toons section of ImaNewbie does Britannia. Enjoy!

The CoM Owns 5 Towns

I read the following interesting newsbit today at UO Journal:

CoM took over 5 Towns by Friday afternoon. After 24 hours of constant battling the CoM have succeeded in capturing and controlling their first towns. CoM forces defended their Stronghold for 24 long hours holding all 8 Town Sigils. Multiple attacks were made by the forces of Minax to breach the defenses. CoM held strong with some faction members manning the embattlements for hours and hours. When asked about this historical day Longshot the recently reelected Commander of CoM said "A big huge thank you to every CoM who fought hard for this victory. It was the group effort from everyone that made it possible."

The Fate of Minax and the FOA Leader

I was skimming recent non-Baja news on UOSS and was pointed to the following thread (in the Sonoma news section, of all places) from the UO Boards web pages, here:

Re: Plot resolution, a problem in Major Plotlines

Ok let me clarify a few things. Nystul and Lord British did not just go through the trouble of opening Trammel on a whim. :) Minax had taken Trinsic, was ravaging the landscape, and had polluted the Shrines of Virtue. The Shrines was the last straw for LB. The shrines are the physical embodiment of his whole belief system. Seeing this action take place was the point at which he decided to risk casting such a powerful spell.

As for the FoA? Martoo and company are all dead, save the mysterious FoA leader who is held prisoner some where in the world. Who was he? Will there ever be some answers to those mysteries surrounding the FoA? Stay tuned. ;)

Minax is still plotting in the dark corners of Felucca.

So very weird things have been happening with a little know mage in Moonglow...named Revlo.

and a fellowed named Gilforn...is about to make the discovery of a lifetime.

As Third Dawn nears release who knows what kind of strange and interesting things are going to happen. Or better still what evil lies beyond Britannia waiting to be released.

The CoM steals Moonglow and Britain Town Sigil

Several factions newsbits from this weeks Feluccian events are now available on the UO Journal site. This more notable and recent account was among them:

A fast paced well-coordinated attack on the Minax Stronghold netted the CoM faction two Town Sigils. Looking like they were starting to build teamwork, the CoM were in and out of the Minax Stronghold within three minutes. The attack led by Longshot succeeded in getting the Town Sigils back to the CoM Stronghold quickly with the defense in place.

The Wedding of Ruby & Phoenix

On Wednesday, the 20th of December, my sister, Queen Ruby Flash of Yoran, was married to Phoenix, Lord High Chancellor of the Knights of Steel. Anticipation was thick, as we were all worried that, like Ruby's previous fiances, Phoenix would meet his death on the wedding day. I, myself, was quite concerned, as I had witnessed the prior attempt and seen the groom slaughtered at the alter. I thought it quite judicious of my sister that this time she had chosen to wed in a field of flowers, should there in fact be any blood. Last time the blood's puddling effect on the tiles of the Nujel'm palace, when it started to run towards the guests' feet....well, let's just say that was a situation best avoided. The seats at this ceremony, too, were well back, should there be any splattering. We were prepared for the worst, even while we hoped for the best.

One thing that stood out to me, having met Lord British within UO, was this tidbit from the interview:
UOD: Heres one thats a little bit away from UO:TD: Will Lord British ever show up again since Richard Garriot is no longer working for Origin?

Tyrant: I dont know what you mean by show up will someone play Lord British? No.
Looks like more chances of me running into LB at the Golden Brew. :(

OSI: Ultima Online Third Dawn Alpha Test

The following was just posted to What's New on the UOUO.com website and to the Third Dawn website:

Ultima Online Third Dawn Alpha Test

We are pleased to announce the start of alpha testing for Ultima Online: Third Dawn! Players participating in the alpha testing phase will begin receiving their CDs and testing instructions in the next several days and are free to log in and start testing as soon as they've received their CDs. Additionally, a new shard named "Alpha 3rd Dawn" will be appearing in the shard listing. This shard is open to all players, but only those with the Third Dawn alpha client will be able to access the new lands through the moongates of Britannia on this shard. The Third Dawn client may be used with any Ultima Online shard, but the new land of Ilshenar is only available on the Alpha 3rd Dawn shard.

As a reminder, this is an alpha testing phase, and as such, we ask that participants keep in mind the known issues list. This list will appear as an in-game message, as a file titled "readme3d.txt" in your Third Dawn directory, and on the Third Dawn bug reporting message board. In addition to known issues, there may also be significant changes made to the game during this phase, and some of the changes may require substantial file downloads - including an approximate 25 megabyte patch download to Third Dawn following installation of the alpha CD. While we will do our best to avoid patches of this size in the future, alpha testers should be aware of the possibility of significant patching. Finally, alpha testers should pay close attention to the Third Dawn bug reporting message board and the "readme3d.txt" file for detailed instructions from the Quality Assurance team explaining the current testing focus and instructions for bug submissions.

During the Third Dawn testing stages, the game is not supported by EA technical or customer support. Game issues that are considered bugs should only be directed to the Third Dawn bug reporting message board. This message board will open to the public on Friday, December 22nd, and can be accessed from the UO Message Boards at http://boards.uo.com.

We appreciate the effort of all of our testers during this early stage of alpha testing and we look forward to sharing the new look of Ultima Online with all of our fans.

Dragon Information

Here's some background again on this Wyrm searching for books story. I found it in the archives here. I posted this on Oct 24th. It was an update then to match activity in October. Seems we can add this to the BNN story and put together a picture of what the brothers want the books for.

My theory is that this book will tell us either how to communicate with this animal Jortis has told his secrets to, or tell us where this animal can be found. Jortis being the ArchSorcerer who was in possession of a staff that could destroy one of the brothers. The location of the staff is unknown now and it seems the brothers are very anxious to get ahold of it.

Here is what I pulled from the Oct 24th issue of The Freeborn Press:

In July I reported this story about The Warring Brothers:

Last night at The Golden Brew a few of us were sitting around visiting when Meredith showed up at the door. We noticed right away that something was different about her she wasnt wearing her famed drake skin armor. I had thought it was her new summer fashion, but she quickly told us of how she had been walking through the woods when a dragon scooped her up. She said she has lost consciousness during the flight and woke up in a web, supposedly held until the dragon was ready to make her a meal. Luckily she was able to slide out of her armor and escape to freedom. She had come to the pub hoping to gather some warriors to go to the lair of the dragon and retrieve her armor. Blind Hawk, Rieko, Kita and I quickly agreed to help, and I sent out pigeons to all I knew. I raced to Skara Brae to claim my horse and met up with members of tDw who readily agreed to join us. We were to meet at the Shrine of Justice and prepare to be gated to the den of this dragon.

As we waited for others to gather at the Shrine, something seemed amiss. Crimson Hellkite noticed it first Meredith didnt seem herself. She was anxious for a battle, and had a bit more blood lust than the Meredith we know. I wrote it off to her anger of being captured. When Dane Alexander arrived and gave Meredith a big slobbery kiss he didnt get the normal reaction, so really started to suspect something. Then the legendary Benedict showed up. Benedict is the paladin from Merediths story of how she got her armorshow Benedict had given it to her. This Meredith made a slip though and mentioned that Benedict had made her armor. Suddenly we knew something was very wrong. We played along though to see what was going on.

Once everyone was ready, Meredith gated us to a location near Destard; we marched to the entrance of a cave where we could see that Methos was already in battle with several air and fire elementals. I quickly took a look inside the cave and saw another Meredith standing by a red dragon! The Meredith inside wore the drake skin armor and stood calmly at the side of the red dragon. The Meredith who had brought us there, began casting spells and shouting for us to kill the dragon and the imposter. Benedict commented how it was odd that Meredith suddenly knew so much magic as to cast such powerful spells. I knew then that we were being lead by the imposter. I quickly ran inside the cave and stood next to the real Meredith. I shouted at the warriors not to kill the dragon or Meredith, that we were being led by a fake.

Suddenly the fake Meredith turned into a white dragon and we knew something terrible was a foot. The two dragons began warring as more fire and air elementals appeared. We all bravely fought the elementals until they were no more. Suddenly the white dragon flew from the cave and disappeared and the red dragon disappeared before our eyes.

Meredith was relieved to see us and glad to be saved from the dragon. She suggested we head back to The Golden Brew where she would tell the tale of how she became a captive of the dragon in the cave.

Tucked safely inside the pub, Meredith began her tale of The Warring Brothers. I dont have the exact story written down as I was busy handing out ale and such, but I think I have the basics.

The two twin brothers Arakhan (who was the red dragon) and Kemarok (the white dragon) grew up a time when humans thought that magic was evil and shunned it. But dragons never scorn any means to power, and so they grew strong in their magic. As they grew older, a fierce rivalry grew between them. One mastered the elements of earth and sea, and the other the elements of fire and air. Each wished devoutly to become the most powerful and each, thinking that their mother loved them best, went to her and asked her how he could defeat his brother. To each she told the same thing... "Only one of you will triumph, and the other will fall. And although I cannot see how it will come to be, the one who falls will fall to power of the staff of Jortis the ArchSorcerer." She knew nothing more about the staff or how this would come to be. So they went their separate ways, each searching desperately for information on the staff, so that they could use it against the other to bring about his downfall. Each hid from the other, fearing that the other might steal what little knowledge they could find about the staff and use it against them. And since there was little to be found about they both hid more and more from the other, jealously protecting their knowledge... and so faded into obscurity and myth.

The story ended there and Meredith explained that she had been looking for information on the staff herself. She gathered that the brothers had gotten wind of her search and hoped she might have knowledge of the location of the staff. Arakhan had found Meredith in the cave and had told her she could leave with her life, if she told him what she knew about the staff. Kemarok on the other hand decided to take this chance and thought hed trick us warriors into killing his brother.

Arakhan and Kemarok have disappeared for now, and we know little of this Staff of Jortis, but of this I am sure we have not seen the last of the warring brothers.
Below is the newer part of the story posted Oct. 24
A few weeks ago, Meredith, I think it was, was telling me how Jortis (and I hope I'm getting the basic details right) had befriended an animal of unknown species. Supposedly this animal would know all sorts of Jortis' secrets, but it is not known where the animal can be found.

Now last night Petrus was In Moonglow and a young scribe approached her for help. She said a scribe she was studying under found old book about animals and went to zoo to study some things, but there has been elemental activity in the area and she wanted us to go escort him back.

Petrus gathered some people together and went down to the zoo. They were attacked by tons of elementals, but then a red dragon showed up and demaded the book and called forth tons and tons of fire elementals on them. Eventually the dragon got fed up and left, but before he did he said that it probably wasn't the last they'd see of that dragon...

Petrus told me the book was something to the effect of the study of animal motions, to do with the way animals move, and the red dragon was not in the book. The scribe said it was simply an old tome, but he'd look at it further. When asked if she could copy the tome, he said it would be too dangerous for her to keep a copy, as the dragon might come after her.

Wyrms Search For Worm-Eaten Tome!

For the second time in mere weeks, a seemingly uninteresting book on zoology has become the center of an intense flurry of activity, this time involving aged scribes, treasonous apprentices and, once again, dragons.

Some of our readers may be aware of the first incident that occurred a few weeks back. At the behest of the apprentice scribe Dorian, a band of brave adventurers rescued the old scribe Adhemar from an attack by a great red dragon, who sought to obtain the scribe's centuries-old book, "Ye Fauna of Sosaria's Fens". They were successful in repelling the dragon's conjured fire and air elementals, and bringing the scribe to a tearful reunion with the beloved apprentice.

It seems rejoicing might have been a bit premature, however. The 'beloved apprentice' turned out to be less than trustworthy, when she made off from the Lycaeum with the book. Adhemar once again called on the people of the realm to help him.

The search was arduous, and Dorian was elusive, but in the end the searchers did catch her; but by then, she had been badly wounded and, alas, she had lost the book. It had been taken by a black dragon! Dorian also revealed that she'd been hired by yet another dragon, Kemarok, to retrieve the book for him. Apparently this dragon is a rival of the red wyrm.

As the searchers absorbed this information, Kemarok, a wyrm of whitish color, appeared and demanded that his employee give him the book. He seemed to refuse to accept that the thief did not have it, and conjured a number of earth and water elementals in anger. In the confusion of the battle that ensued, Dorian managed to escape inside the Lycaeum.

The battle against the furious dragon's minions ended only when a black wyrm, presumably the one described by Dorian, flew past the scene, not pausing in the slightest. Kemarok was heard to mumble the word, "Mother", before taking wing to follow, utterly forgetting about the adventurers. The dragons were seen flying off the isle.

The adventurers returned to Adhemar in the Lycaeum, where they explained to him what had transpired. They very cleverly reasoned that Dorian was still within the hallowed halls of the library, and after a short search, brought her to Adhemar. A rancorous discussion followed about the trust betrayed by Dorian. Despite an escape attempt made, thanks to the cover of an invisibility spell cast by an unknown wizard, Dorian did not elude her pursuers again and was taken away by a guard.

Yet a mystery remains. Neither Adhemar nor Dorian could offer any explanation as to why three dragons were so interested in an ancient tome about zoology. Perhaps some clever soul in our readership can find a relationship, or some later clue will reveal itself. Or maybe dragons share a terribly competitive interest in age-old animals?

OSI: Client Patch 2.0.4

The following was just posted to FYI on the UO.com website:

Client Patch 2.0.4

We are targeting to release client patch 2.0.4 on Wednesday, December 20th (CST). The client patch will remove the tips and update messages, fix an issue with the default desktops, and update language files.

If you have any difficulty receiving this patch, please check the following:
  • Check the "Patch" directory within your Ultima Online directory (the default location is C:\\Program Files\Ultima Online\Patch). This directory should be empty. Any files in this directory should be deleted.
  • If you are unable to connect to the patch server at all, and are using an original (Non-T2A) version of Ultima Online, you may need to update your verinfo file. For details on updating this file, please see the information posted at http://support.uo.com/tech_6.html.
  • Run a virus scan on your computer.
If after trying the above, you are still experiencing difficulty patching the Ultima Online client, please contact Technical Support at tech@uo.com.

The Oven

Due to popular demand The Oven is now back open! As a reminder the message board is meant for hot topics about UO. If you don't like something or just plain out want to complain, do it.

There are a few simple ground rules I've mentioned in topic #1. Please take the time to read it or the consequences could get you banned from the board.

I've enjoyed reading and posting topics on The Oven in the past since it attracts all sorts of people. If you have a problem with someone and don't want to 'flame' a public message board, then flame away on mine! You can yell at each other until you're blue in the face or actually try to work out your differences, either way it's fine with me.

Spread the word, I invite all people from all Ultima Online communities to come and post on my board. If any admins of any boards have a problem with people, feel free to send them to The Oven to work it out.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to some "hot" topics.

Faction News (Felucca)

The following newsbits were recently published to UO Journal:

The CoM attacks Minax's Stronghold

Saturday night the CoM attacked and held Minax's Stronghold for over 3 hours. The CoM overwhelmed the defenders of the Stronghold with minimal causalities. Many of Minax's faction members were killed. The CoM held the Stronghold against multiple small Minaxian and Shadowlords attacks. In the end it took the combined forces of Minax and the Shadowlords to overcome the large CoM force. The attack and occupation of Minax's Stronghold shows that the CoM forces are getting organized and can succeed against Minax.

Minaxians Retake Stronghold

Minaxians regrouped in Moonglow while the Shadowlords attempted to draw the CoM members out of the Stronghold. Minaxians attacked the CoM members in force around 11:30. One Minaxian force attacked CoM members on the northern ramparts. A few moments later another force attacked the front gate with an elite unit of mages and warriors. The mages dispelled the energy fields and poison fields placed at the front gate by CoM members.

The killing blow to the CoM forces was the introduction of a Faction Town Guard into the battle. The guard took out the inter-court defensive force and that is the moment the Stronghold started to fall. Low on regeants and potions the CoM force soon succumbed to the Minaxian onslaught.

Ultima Online: Third Dawn (PC) New Screens And Details

Gamespot recently posted this article about Ultima Online: Third Dawn, the original of which can be found here.

Ultima Online: Third Dawn (PC) New Screens And Details
The new 3D Ultima client revealed.
Screens
We have 9 pix
check them out...

Announced at the inaugural Ultima Online World Faire, UO: Third Dawn was paraded to the press yesterday with, if not a fanfare, then a certain degree of pride.

At heart Third Dawn takes the old 2D client software (the software that gives you access to the Ultima worlds) and gives it a new interface, improved functionality and most importantly, a new dimension.

Gone are the old 2D sprites, trees, texture tiles and lighting and in come fully 3D rendered avatars, monsters, vegetation and animals to give the game a look more appropriate to 2001 than 1996.

Origin has created nearly 200 different character models for the new 3D client but they are keen to make sure that it is reasonably accessible to most users, aiming for a minimunm spec of a 8Mb video card.

Ultima Online users with low-end machine needn't panic though - the old 2D client will still work perfectly well, the only downside is that 2D users won't be able to access the new land that is being launched with Third Dawn. This features a number of new buildings and monsters that are simply incompatible with the older 2D client.

The new land will be roughly equal in size to the land that was launched alongside Ultima Online: Renaissance, the previous 2D client iteration.

Origin claims the new interface is much more user friendly and better designed than before, and certainly the screen looks alot less cluttered. Where the old interface was a blank page to be filled by the user (often daunting to the new user, says Origin) the new interface has everything a user needs right there, although elements can be moved and removed with ease.

This all fits with the philosophy of making the Ultima Environment challenging for hardcore players but also enticing for the new user. As such the release of Third Dawn will also mark the launch of a new help channel to aid newbies get started.

Ultima Online: Third Dawn (which will include the 2D client) will be released by EA Games in the UK in March 2001.

Click the link above to see the new screens and join us next week for more info and screenshots.

Shadowlight Christmas Summary

I saw the following posted on the Golden Brew Messageboard:

Thank ye to all that came to talk with Santa or just to to play in the games. I'd like to specially thank Ursula, Mirabel, Sleath, and the AoV members for help with decorating the tavern and gathering some supplies. Thank you very much all of ye!

The night started out with everyone coming over to the Village hall to have a seat on Santa's knee to tell him what they wanted for Christmas. Santa talked to many many children last night. At a table next to Santa, Athena, the Gypsy Queen, was giving near year fortune readings. Unfortunately she soon felt very drained and passed out during a reading.

After about an hour Santa and his reindeer left, yelling "Merry Christmas to all and to all a Goodnight!" to all at the tavern. With that he, his reindeer and helper, flew out of site.

Anvil showed up at the tavern, and began the caroling contest. The winners of the event were:

1st place: Kita Talith (with 15 out of 15 correct)
2nd place: Ursula (with 14 our of 15 correct)
3rd place: Mirabel (with 9 out of 15 correct)

After prizes were given and congratulations exchanged, Anvil started the second event.

Here folks got part of Santa's christmas list, as he had lost his bag filled with goodies. Everyone had an hour to return with as many goodies as they could. The winners of this event were:

1st place:Maston Stamper (all items in)
2nd place:Mirabel (all items in)
3rd place:Bronwyn (all items but 1 in)

All in all I hope ye had as much fun at the party as those that hosted it did having it for ye.

*wishing ye and yers a very merry christmas*

Faction News (Felucca)

The following was recently posted to UO Journal:

Sunkist now Leads True Britannians

As one of the smallest factions can Sunkist increase membership? Sunkist seems to be relatively unknown even among he/her factions members. With a lot of factors against this faction Sunkist has a hard road ahead. Will he/she look towards other factions as allies?

Archangel Shadowlords Leader Elected

The Shadowlords elected archangel as the first Shadowlords leader. How will archangel deal with Minax? Will he look to the other two factions as allies against Minax? Can he lead the Shadowlords into capturing their first town?

Christmas Bells

I read the following post on Tradespot regarding Christmas bells:

There are 15 different colors available....and 22 different names.....haven't determined how many different sounds. To get every possible bell with every possible combination of names, colors and sounds, you'd end up with somewhere between 3500 - 4000 bells for a "complete" set. :) The names are as follows:

Contrary to rumors, there is NOT a bell from Calandryll (per his own words).

OSI: Veteran Rewards Testing

The following was just posted to FYI on the UO.com website:

Veteran Rewards Testing

We will be restoring a recent game backup of the Great Lakes shard to a test shard in the next several days, and we urge Great Lakes players to drop by and join in Veterans Reward phased testing. The current phase in testing will allow reward choices to only those accounts with 36 months or more of active status. You do not need to have a current character on Great Lakes in order to help test. Any 36+ month account can create character(s) on the Great Lakes Test shard to test the rewards system. The rewards system may have to be deactivated for some hours at a time during these tests. If you do not see the system on when you arrive, try again in awhile!

We look forward to seeing you on the test shard!

Faction News from UO Journal

The following new pieces were available today on UO Journal::

Gorechild Elected Leader of Minaxians

Gorechild has been elected the very first leader of the most powerful faction on the shard. No surprise as he is one the best warriors on the shard with a long history of victories. He was at one point one of the most feared killers in most parts of Britannia. He is a longstanding member of LoD. I attempted to get an interview from him but I was dead before I even got a word out.

Longshot Elected Leader of the CoM

Longshot has been elected leader of the second largest guild on the shard. The CoM is one of the only guilds to have taken and held town sigils for even a few hours. With recent attacks on Magincia it has been very hard for the faction get together. Can he over come the communication problems in the faction?

Cities Guarded and Trapped by Minax

The following was just posted at UO Journal:

Minax now owns every city with a sigil, and has deployed traps & guards to the point that it is almost impassible for anyone but Minax to travel safely to any city. The question is, can the alliance between LoD & g_d be stopped? Shadowlords, True Brits & Council of Mages have been pushed into the cities of Occlo, Nu'jelm & Jhelom. Tis a scary alliance that rules the lands.

Power outages in the Austin area are continuing to interrupt areas of the Ultima Online service. At this time, the Lake Superior shard is unavailable. Additionally, telephone account support, email, game patching, and the Account Management website are out of service.

As we are unable to provide adequate support coverage for all shards due to power outage, we have decided to hold the publish of the items listed in Testing for Next Update to the remaining shards. We will release an updated schedule for this publish as soon as possible.

We are continuing to work at bringing the affected areas of our service online as quickly as possible.

Faction Observations

Tonight while updating sigil runes in my faction runebook, I noticed Minaxians firmly entrenched at almost every sigil and townstone location across Felucca, save Magincia. Recalling back and forth between sigils, I spied Finance Ministers as well as Sheriffs devoted to towns such as Skara Brae, Moonglow, and Yew. Beserkers and Dragoons (Minax's guards) were also being stationed in Trinsic, Yew, and Britain with several being enlisted and trained as I looked on. In Britain several vendors were also evident around the sigil, selling bottles, faction horses, lumber, regeants, and ore.

From this citizen's glance, it seems like the Minaxians are slowly gaining a firm foothold on the various cities across the land, a huge step since Trinsic was invaded by Juo'nar and Marabelle at the beginning of the year.

    Flenniel's Feather Quest

The following information was gathered concerning (Seer character) Flenniel Loak and his quest for feathers.

Ursula's comments were from the Golden Brew message board:

    Flenniel's Feather Quest
I was unable to stay for the whole thing, so someone will have to finish it up for me.

Last night at the AoV Tavern Flenniel Loak arrived. He told us that lower Skara Brae had been overrun with chickens. He needed a group of people to go there and gather as many feathers they could, then go to Yew where a bowyer would make arrows. From there the group was to go to Vesper, Felucca to sell the arrows.

We all agreed to help out Flenniel and set out to Skara Brae. After collecting about 8600 feathers we went off to Yew where the bowyer made us arrows.

After that point, I was not around, but here are the photos I did take

    Flenniel at the AoV Tavern

    Arriving at Skara Brae

    The aftermath

Twithead continued on with his telling of the night's activities on the Savage Truth Public Message Board:
Me be try be remember... *thinks hard*

Me be remember we be take alla them feathers be plucked from chickens and we be go to bow shop. We went to one in Yew town square and we be all crowd in there, waiting for bowyer be show up. We wait and we wait and we wait. Then we waited some more... Teeheehee!

Then, someone be say what about bowshop to south? Doh! There be another bowshop? *giggles* So we be make giant horsey parade down down down to other bowshop, and there be nice bowyer person be want our feathers! Him be ask how many feathers we be have and someone be said 8000! Me fainted at that point and not know what be happen until someone be start talking about working hard for be chop boards. At that point, me run outta there fast fast!

*nods* Me hop on me horsey and run off. Me run and me run and me run... until me got to bank. Then me be took out 300 boards from one o' ST wood chop trips and be gate back to shop... It be hard work be try drag boards into shop! Me not strong and it be take forever! In all, me think we alla be got together enough for 2000 arrows?

Then we be go back to Shadowlight where me thought we be have chance sit back and drink some ale after alla hard work... But Joye no be have any ale, just spring water and cider. Me bought some water, thinking it be orc liquor. *sighs* Then we be see him who be hire us all do be all him running around. Me not catch him name, but it be somethink like Foak or Loak or Soak? Me terrible with names, waah! Well, him tell us be make off with arrows be sell them in Vesper on Felucca facet. Felucca! *shivers* Me be get very very bad feeling at this point.

So, him be make facet gate to Felucca, but for some reason, we not be use this one. Instead, him make moongate to crossroads outside o' Vesper near Covetous. And then him make facet moongate from there to Felucca. Whee! Me like take gates, them be fun when me go whoosh!

We be arrive at crossroad on Felucca facet, but alas, Ashli who be carrying alla our arrows be stunned by alla gate travel. We be defend ourselves against alla these wicked mean nasty bad evil mages and them elementals which be come up and try eat us! Then big ugly green poison elemental be come up and scared me bad! It be great!

So, we be all go back to crossroad and be take facet moongate back to Trammel. Then we be go through that moongate back to Shadowlight tavern. Me felt like rejoicing and me go in and buy big jug o' cider. Me be take a few sips when that trader guy be come back and him be talk with us who be gone on trade mission. *giggles*
Ashli of Shadowlight posted a final concern:
Just filling in a few blanks

Between Twit and Ursula that was just about everything :)

Only other thing was it seems Thurston took Athena from us for a few brief seconds. When she returned she was wearing a robe much like his own.

She wouldn't tell us what he said... guess we'll have to keep an eye on her.. and wait for Thurston to appear again.

    Mendur's Mad Cow Quest

Ursula posted these information regarding Mendur Marris (a Seer's character) on the Golden Brew message board:

    Mendur's Mad Cow Quest
Last night Mendur Marris showed up during Petrus' party and explained that the people of Cove, Felucca were having a problem with the cows in the area being affected with an odd disease.

He told us that all the cows were also attracting all sorts of monsters that threatened Cove. We raced off for Cove and immediately began attacking the diseased cows. Suddenly an Ogre Lord of surprising strength appeared. Luckily the guards of Cove acted quickly and he died to their blades.

Then a green cow appeared! People who attempted t o attack it were immediately stricken with the same sickness that had effected the poor animal. Athena, sensing that swords and magic might not be the best way to deal with the situation, implored the crowd to stop attacking the sick animal. As we stood watching, the sickly cow became healthy right before our eyes. He began frolicking through the woods and dug up gold and treasure maps. He then dashed off into the forest, happily flicking his tail behind him.

We then all went back to the Golden Brew to tell Mendur about our adventure. After our story Mendur said his good-byes as he plans on vacation in Nu'Jhelom for about a month.

    Petrus' Party Pictures

Last night we had a lot going on. One thing that was had a lot of fun doing was Petrus' birthday party. We all dressed in robes similar to her, hid and when she arrived we cast blessings on her and wished her a happy birthday.

    Friends Without Faces

Ursula pointed out this charming poem which Dischordia posted on the Swords of Sacrifice Message Forum:

    Friends Without Faces

We sit here and we type, and we stare at our screens
We all have to wonder, what this possibly means.

With our mouses we roam, through rooms in a maze
Looking for something or someone, as we sit in a daze.

We chat with each other, we all type our woes
Small groups we do form, and gang up on our foes.

We wait for somebody, to type out our name
We want recognition, but its always the same.

We give kisses and hugs, and sometimes we flirt
In ICQ we chat deeply, and reveal why we hurt.

We do form friendships - but - why we dont know
Sometimes these friendships, will flourish and grow.

Why is it we share, the thoughts in our mind
With those we can't see, as tho we were blind.

The answer is simple, its as clear as a bell
We all have our problems, and need someone to tell.

We can't tell real people, but tell someone we must
So we turn to the 'puter, and to those we can trust.

Even though it is crazy, the truth still remains
We are friends with out faces, with odd little names.

    A Peace Request....

As many know over the past few weeks I have been in search of Death Seer and the tomes that he holds, I have even most recently offered a reward for the person that can bring me his head and the tomes. However, these tactics proved to be futile as most of the current population of Sosaria are now raised tward Lord British's virtues. And so, I now offer one last thing. I offer a peace, I wish to end these hostilities between the Tower and Dawn, if you can find it within your scheduele I wish to meet with ye, to discuss the terms of a treaty. I shall discuss the time and place with you later. And as of now the bounty on your head shall be disreguarded by all members of the Dark Tower. Anyone trying to take your head now shall be claimed as enemies of the tower.

Winter Solstice Celebration in Heaven's Forge (Trammel)

A Letter from the Mayor of Heaven's Forge:

In the past people feared the coming of the winter's solstice for it meant the end of the world. They would huddle together on the darkest night of the year and pray to their gods that the dawn would come. It always did. Finally we have learned there is no fear of the long, dark night. Instead let us gather in celebration of the coming of winter.

The town of Heaven's Forge invites you to join them in their first annual Winter's Solstice Festival. It will be held on Friday, December 15th, beginning at 7:00pm pacific time at the Darkmor Tavern. The events will benefit the Heaven's Forge Outreach Fund, a newly established fund to aid those new to the lands and needy citizens of Heaven's Forge. The fund also will assist in the sponsorship of future festivals and events in Heaven's Forge. We'll have poetry, song, dancing, drinking, eating and merry making aplenty. We'll also be holding several events for your enjoyment and participation. The events and their respective contacts if you are interested are as follows:

Miss Snow Bunny pageant. We'll be seeking the fairest of the land in their finest winter attire. Ladies only, please. If you're interested in being a contestant, please contact Michael (ICQ 36054094) or Pickster (ICQ 70309596).

Boxing matches. Are you the best bare-handed fighter in Britannia? Enter the contest and prove it. Darkmor Tavern representatives will be accepting wagering on the events starting one half-hour prior to the matches. No bets will be accepted following the beginning of the first match. Contact Sleath for details and to enter (ICQ 897034).

Ladies' mud wrestling. A twist on the boxing contest involving women and mud. Darkmor Tavern representatives will be accepting wagering on the events starting one half-hour prior to the matches. No bets will be accepted following the beginning of the first match. Contact Mirabel (ICQ 11015595) for details and to
    enter.

Chicken fights. Our guild tamer, Pamela Anderson, will bring dozens of chickens from around the land and pit them against each other for your viewing and betting pleasure (No outside chickens, please). Sleath, the proprietor of Darkmor, will have betting tables arranged.

Do you have a poem to read? Can you sing a song? Can you or a group of friends play for the enjoyment of the crowd? If the answer to any of these is "yes," then we'd like to have you at this event as a patron and as part of the entertainment.

For more details, directions or contact information, please visit the Heaven's Forge website or contact me, Darius (ICQ 988442).

We look forward to seeing you.

    Moonglow Quest (Pieced Together)

I pieced together a few accounts of a quest I heard of on the Tradespot and UOSS Baja boards. This is what I have so far:

A few nights back, a scholar at the Encyclopedia Magicka in Moonglow was looking for a book that disappeared. He enlisted the aid of several warriors who went off in seach of the tome. They soon found a thief named Dorian who claims that a dragon commanded him to take the book.

Soon thereafter elementals are found outside Moonglow's Lycaeum(?), apparently summoned by a white dragon. A black dragon soon joins in the fight. One of them carries the book which is entitled "Ye Fauna of Sosaria's Fens", the book they are looking for. Anyway, it turns out that the dragon(s) soon escape through the southside of Moonglow.

After the dragon(s) escapes the scholar tells people to ask around in taverns about the white, black, and red dragons. Apparently the red dragon is named "Arakhan" although I did not find an account of the others.

If anyone has more cohesive information on this quest or paintings, feel free to send them here to our pressroom.

Mad Miners Repulsed by Graveyard Thugs (Felucca)

Infuriated miners bore down on the Britain Cemetary last night, ignoring the faction melees taking place in the city around them. Dressed in blood red colors, wielding torches, and bearing pickaxes, the mob swarmed into the area around the Britain graveyard, with one purpose. They sought to eradicate those they knew would be preying on innocents in the area. For a few hours they valiently hurled themselves at the heavily armored bandits in the area, but it did little good. The miners were too resource poor and inexperienced to launch much of a cohesive attack.

Eventually the mad miners recalled their attack and were unwillingly forced back to their hovels, defeated and with broken spirits. When asked what was in their future, this is what was said:

"Now we is stuck in Felucca until we die fum malv-o-nourismint o' until we strike a o'e vein an' hit it rich. As fo' future assaults, ah's not so sho'nuff. Mebbe we will try a diffrunt area next time."

The CoM Raids Moonglow and Chases Minax Out (Felucca)

UO Journal had the following to report today regarding factions on Baja:

Working in small-organized teams the CoM gated on top of the Moonglow bank. The CoM was out numbered as they took Minax on in Moonglow Saturday evening. A short exchange accrued with numerous Minaxians falling under the fury of the mages attack.

Minaxians were soon chased out of town by the CoM. True to Minax's faction size and organization they begin to return in numbers. Minaxians returned to Moonglow a few minutes later but the CoM was already in Britain hounding the Shadowlords.

Minax Controls all Town Sigils (Felucca)

I read the following faction news on UO Journal today:

Minax owns Moonglow now. Friday night or early Saturday Morning Minax took Moonglow's Town sigil to their stronghold and held it. They have now captured the last town sigil.

On Monday evening or Thursday in the early morning Moonglow will become available again, as will the other town sigils that will be neutral today and tomorrow. A faction can hold a city for 3 days before the process start over again. Will any of the factions be able to stop Minax?

Council of Mages attacks Minax (Felucca)

I read this and other faction related spots at the UO Journal:

Around 9:45 shard time, the CoM conducted an attack in force on Minax's Stronghold. Over 50-faction members took part in this assault. Minax fell back as the onslaught of mages approached the stronghold's entrance. Fighting to the front gate of the fort the CoM held out making several attempts to break into the interior of the stronghold.

But Minax was strong and held fast. Nearly 15 minutes before the attack was finally repulsed. The CoM fell back to Moonglow fighing several holding engagements.

    OSI: Resurrection Killing

The following was added to "FYI" on the Ultima Online web site:

    Resurrection Killing

Resurrection Killing As a reminder, the action known as "resurrection killing" is not a support issue. Please do not call or e-mail our support staff regarding resurrection killing. Instead, use alternative locations or methods for resurrection in a less dangerous area. If in a Faction or guild war, take note of the surroundings before attempting a resurrection. It is also a good idea to travel unseen to other players while looking for a place to resurrect.

    OSI: Holiday Gifts

The following was added to "General Testing" on the Ultima Online web site:

    Holiday Gifts

Characters that are older then 30 days (real days, not UO days) will be given a holiday ticket in their backpacks. This holiday ticket will only work for the player who received it originally. Double-clicking this ticket will allow players to choose from the following items. The item will then be placed in the character's backpack once the selection is made. Note that the system will be made inactive before January 8, so any characters created from this point forward will not be able to get a holiday ticket this season. All items are blessed (no loot/no steal), which means they cannot be looted or stolen.
    Holiday Bells

Choosing a holiday bell will give the character a random bell. Each bell plays a random sound when double-clicked, says which Development Team member it is from when single-clicked, and is hued a random color. The sounds, development member name, and colors are random for each bell selection.

    Snow globe

The snow globe is a round orb on a small stand, that glows and has "sparkles" inside of it. The snow globes will be named "a snowy scene of {town name}". The names of all non-player created towns will be possible within the name, and will be randomly selected. The snow globes will function as a small light source.

    Snowballs
    • Selecting the snowballs will place a snow pile in your backpack. To throw a snowball at another player, double-click the snow pile and target a player. Only players who have a snow pile in their backpack can be targeted in this manner. You will receive a message if the targeted player is not a valid target.
    • There is a delay as to how often you can throw a snowball from the snow pile.
    • The snow piles have unlimited uses.
    Holiday Tree Deed
    • Selecting the Holiday Tree Deed will place a deed in your backpack.
    • To place the tree in your house, double-click the deed. This will bring up a menu window, allowing the choice between classic and modern style trees. A classic tree is the model used previously in UO, and will not have visible foliage if used in Felucca (only if display settings are set to not show tree foliage). The modern style tree will show foliage on both facets, regardless of foliage display settings.
    • Holiday Trees cannot be placed within two tiles of your front door or within two tiles distance of stairs and cannot be placed outside.
    • Players will be able to re-deed their tree and choose either tree style, as desired.
    • Holiday Trees can only be placed by the house owner.

    Adventures of a Cookie Salesman

I read a half-mention of something on Lum the Mad that lead me to "Adventures of a Cookie Salesman". This is a 10 page Ultima Online cartoon, starring a parent roaming Britannia while trying to sell cookies for the Vesper Girls School. Here's the opening paragraph:

Like any good husband and father, I do as I'm told. My wife and eldest daughter told they needed to sell cookies as a school fundraiser. They said other fathers sold them at the office and I was expected to try as well.

    Events of Yestereve

The events that happened yester eve were very hard to follow. We were very out numbered and this caused for a bit of chaos. Together though, Anvil and Asmodean have put thier heads together to come up with this recollection of events.

Mendur was at the brew early on in the night, and we talked to him about various things, including him, his daughter and Flenniel leaving for Nujelm. Nothing of real interest happened at the Brew although Athena, a Gypsy Queen who lives in Shadowlight was working spells on the dirt of a plant and producing gems and other such things. Mendur commented on the language that he had heard the accent before and said he couldn't quite put a finger on what it was as it was "very old". So thats about all that happened at the Brew and after Mendur left we took our leave back to Shadowlight. And boy were we in for the shock and fight of our lives!!!

When we got back to the tavern there were elementals of all kinds and their evil mage companions attacking the tavern, we quickly dispatched the first bunch but then a mystical purple gate opened and many more eles and mages poured through and in great numbers too. We were hard pressed to fend off this second wave of attackers but when we did manage to supress this attack we decided to venture into the gate. We found that this gate lead to the Felucca facet and low and behold there were ten times more eles and mages than that had attacked us before. They must have been preparing for the final attack, one that would have left us dead for sure. However, we were in luck as we quickly attacked the unsuspecting elementals and were able to elimante the threat in Felucca as well. But when we thought all was safe, a talkative blood elemental appeared who could summon others of his kin (water, fire, air eles). We wore the blood ele down and killed all his forces. When we were close to victory the blood ran off and then came someone we had met just nights pervious, Thurston!!

We fought with Thurston as he kept on summoning forces, we soon discerned that Thurston and the blood element were one in the same. He kept on proclaiming that those not born with the magics in thier blood were ungifted. That he was gifted and all ungifted shall die. He then summoned great powers and changed into a dragon! Quickly after he changed back into a blood ele as if the dragon form could not be held for very long. We fought this version of Thurston and then, he began to summon the powers of old, as soon as he did he spotted Athena and paused for a moment to glance at her. He informed her that she was gifted, and yet she fought others of her kind, speaking of himself and his fellow mages. He stated that she must go with him and join the Arcane Order of the Light, as we were not worth of her. We all told her NO, dont' join this evil man but she had other ideas and made Thurston promise that the attacks on Shadowlight would cease if she joined the Order. He agreed and proclaimed it was fate that the gifted shall rule the world, and in it's rule all ungifited shall die so that the gifted may be freed! He also noticed a women named Calysto and also said that she had the gift and should join the Order. She seemed rather confused and rattled at hearing this and took her leave. Thurston then went and we journeyed back to the village and the tavern to drink the hurt in our bodies away.

We were in the tavern discussing the events of the eve when Flenniel Loak showed up. We told him of what happened and he replied that he thought it was his fault because the Order of the Arcane Light wants his head. We told him that it was not his fault as people like us will always fight wrong and evil wherever we see it.

Flenniel warned Athena to think before she acts and joines the Order of the Arcane light. We hope she does heed his warning. Nae much of anything else happened, we spoke business with Flenniel for a while, informing him of Shadowlight upcoming trade ventures and thanked him for his inspiration and shared knowledge.

    Miner's Revenge (Felucca)

This week in Feluccian Britain, disgruntled miners have been overheard yammering of a violent uprising while at the Unicorn Horns Tavern. High moonstone prices to utopian Trammel, followed by low ore yield in the local mountains have driven the miners to the poverty level, sending countless spelunkers raving mad across the countryside. Above and beyond all their grievances is the fact that the ore level is fine locally, although they can't escape their no win situation due to the ludicrously high murder rate of miners by bands of people with "nothin' better t'do" .

"We kin't fend ourselves aginst th' murderin' pigs who gank us while we mine th' local range. We kin't even feed our families, fine them who haf them ennyway. Fo' all who be hankerin' t'git back at all them non-miners who haf been hackin' us t'bits, join us witcher noobie at th' Brit Wess Bank this hyar Sat at 8pm PST. Brin' yer pickaxe an' dress in red boyo."

    Holiday Artwork Submissions 2000

The following was just recently posted to FYI at the UO.COM site:

It's that time of year again! Raise a mug of eggnog, twirl a sprig of mistletoe (or nightshade), and toast the holiday spirit in Britannia. While you're enjoying yourself, why not celebrate the holiday season by grabbing your piles of cotton, stacks of cloth, gold, and reagents and submitting your holiday decorations to the Britannian Holiday Artwork Display?

Send us your screenshots of holiday decorations created by you and your friends within the world of Ultima Online. String lights around your aquarium, place a Santa by your door, or herd some dragons into a holiday display. Send us a screenshot of your holiday creation using items available in Ultima Online, and we may display it front and center on the UO.com website for the holidays!

    The Guidelines
We've kept the guidelines to a minimum to give you plenty of room for creativity:

    • Holiday Theme - Your submission must have a holiday theme. As we are aware that not everyone celebrates the same holidays, all we ask is that your submitted art focus on a holiday celebrated at this time of year (as opposed to Halloween or Labor Day). Be it Boxing Day, Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa, the choice is up to you.

    • You must be a current UO subscriber and include your account name with your submission.
    • Artwork must be submitted in .bmp form at a minimum of 640 x 480 resolution, 24-bit color. You may send us .zip files, but please, no zip executable files. Any .exe files will be deleted.
    • Artwork must be submitted as an original screenshot created with items found in Ultima Online. Doctored images will be disqualified.
Submissions are due by 11:59 PM, December 14th (US CST). Please email your screenshot as an attached file to uo-profiles@uo.com. Include your real name, character name, a description of your submission (including what you used to make it), and a telephone number where we may be able to reach you on or around December 15th.

The winning screenshots will be on display on the Ultima Online website from December 22, 2000 to January 5, 2001.

Lockdown Changes / Holiday Tree Enabling

The following newspieces were taken from UO.COM - Testing for Next Update:

    Lockdown Changes

Players may now lockdown items on/near stairs that are "passable". This means they can lock down any item that can be walked over or on, near stairs.

    Holiday Tree Enabling

Players will be able to use their currently existing holiday tree deeds on both the Trammel and Felucca facets. Because of the way foliage is displayed in Felucca, there will be an option to display a holiday tree without foliage or a second option for a tree with foliage. Players with the foliage display turned on for Felucca with see both tree types with foliage. Trees placed on the Felucca shard must be re-deeded by double-clicking the trunk portion of the tree, regardless of their foliage option. Classic style trees will not show foliage in Felucca, if the player has Felucca foliage disabled as their option. Modern style trees will display foliage in Felucca regardless of display settings.

    LoD Returns to Baja

No, you didnt read it wrong. LoD has come back to Baja after the recent reinstatement of the majority of our accounts, and the coming of Factions. LoD hasn't left Siege for good, its more viewed as a PK'ing oppertunity while Baja will be used for Factions.

Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, who could think of faction wars without LoD in them. Factions are looking even better than most had hoped, with some features that bring it closer to games like Shadowbane . Towns actually serve a purpose now, controlling them is the only way to make the best items, which in turn makes PvP'ing actually have a purpose other than board flaming rights. Finally OSI has made an update that Improves the PvP community instead of destroying it so others can bake bread.

Baja is honestly quite sad ... The top 4 guilds memberwise on Baja have a combined 0 !??! wars between them. How sad is that? The only time they actually get their asses to declare war and fight is for easy guilds like M&D. And they expect to join factions and all of sudden be good at PvP? I dont think so, gm Cooks. Ill be sure to update as LoD takes over Baja once again, i look forward to watching them do it.

Hired by Flenniel Loak & Meeting Thurston

Let me start of by introducin myself. I am Lady Ashli, sister to Anvil, and Master of Merchants to the Village of Shadowlight. *curtsies*

Being a merchant I nae see or do many things that most would find exciting. Less of course taken yer axe to every tree ye see is exciting to ye. *giggles*.

By the by, I stopped in to tell ye what adventure found me yester eve, as after I told Anvil he said the folk at Golden Brew would be interested to hear this.

It started off, with me making furniture for a person that just moved in to Shadowlight. I went to the Village hall to gather some things and I heard a horse nearby. I nae thought much of it, till I heard the door open downstairs. I went down to see who was a bout and there, on his horse sat a strapping older man. Nae a bad looker if I may say so *giggles*. But I digress, he introduced him self as Flenniel Loak, a merchant.

He looked me up and down and could tell, i'm only assuming because of my rather musular arms for a a lady, that I too was a merchant. Folk from around the village soon gathered round.

Sir Loak then told us that the person who has been sending the attacks upon him has now began to attack his hired merchants that he has doing business for him. Because of this he has been working him self to death.

He asked a favor. He wanted me, with guards (Blade, Grand Mystic, Rariel, Asmodean, Greymalkin, and Bjarne) to go to the Empathy Abby and purchase some very fine Wine. He told me that he would give me 10,000 for this purchase, but I should of course get a better deal if possible.

So I with the protection of my guards went to the Yew Empathy Abby to meet the monk, Virgil. Virgil was nae an easy person to do business with. He started off asking 20,000 for the 40 bottles of wine! After a very long negotiation and quick thinking on my part I worked him down to 9,200 for the wine. I had just gotten Flenniel the wine for less then he was expecting!

Our task was not yet over though, as we now had to take this fine wine, and go to the lands ruled by Minax, and sell them at 'The Peg Leg' in Bucaneers Den. We soon arived by a mystical gate that Flenniel conjured for us. We were on the shoreline on the far South side of Bucaneer Isle. The Peg Leg, was to the far north. We began walking, my guards ahead of me to make sure our merchandise reached it's destination.

As we walked through the woods, we were attacked, much like Flenniel's other merchants. Elementals began attacking my guards, they hide me from the attacker with a magic cloaking spell, and quickly made the path safe for me again. But nae for long. My guards fought thier way to the streets of Bucaneer's Den. Where they wre accosted by a very strong Blood Elemental. After a long battle, and many near death experiences, the fiend fell to thier might.

We were once again on our way to the Peg Leg, where we met Burl, a rather crude, and seemingly dishonorable man. After using many... *blushes* tactics that only a female can on a man, I raised what he was willing to by the wine for to 17,500. I quickly accepted the offer, as I had pushed this sale in ways I have never pushed any other. But I have just made Flenniel a profit of 8,300 gold.

We soon were on our way back to the mystical gate summoned by Flenniel. As we gathered around the gate a mage appeared behind us. And began to bark out threats.

"He entered with a dark frown, and yelled that we had destroyed most of the chosen but that we will not win so easily, called us ungifted peasants and began to summon many evil brothern. After those evils were gone my gaurds took thier might to Thurston and attacked. With the attack on himself, he yelled out that the Order of the Arcane light shall see our kind erased, and that they were being paid to do thier duty, which made it only sweeter. With that he summoned more elementals, and recalled from us."

The guards dispatched of the elementals, and we were were once again, back at the Tavern of the Virtues, awaiting Sir Loak to tell him how we fared. After discussing business Sir Loak divided the profit I had made amongst myself and my guards.

We told him of Thurston and the Order of the Archane Light, but like us he had never heard of him, nor this Order he spoke of.

After some light conversation and Flenniel teling us of Mendur and Aireen's trip to Nujelm, and that he may be joining them depending on business, he was off.

We all went back to our business, but each pondering to themselves, of Thurston, and the Order of the Arcane Light.

New archery shoppe coming to Avalon

Hear ye, hear ye, fellow Avalonians and all who have a concern!

This day I have moved out of the small house that has long been known as Leather & Lace. Roxie's brother, Arius, has taken ownership of Raven's small tower east of Avalon and I am moving in with him. Leather & Lace has been made public and renamed to Avalon Archery Shoppe. I hope to gather the fine Avalon bowcrafters and fletchers to the shop and provide a place for them to work and sell their wares.

If you have interest in this project, please let me know.

*yawns* Moving is hard work. I need a nap.

    Reward: Dead or Alive...

    Hail all ye foolish Sosarians,

As you may have recently heard, a former member of the tower is holding something which we are in dire need of. What you, and possibly he, may not know is that I am now putting out a reward for him. Death Seer is an enemy of the Tower and has stolen one of the sacred tomes left by Na-Krul. I am offering a reward for anyone who can bring me his body with the tome. I am not a picky man, so I will let you decide wheter or not to bring him to me dead or alive, but I must warn you that the tower does not tolerate ignorance and will punish anyone who tries to oppose us. Bring me the tome and Death Seer's body and you shall receive your reward, 'tis as simple as that.

    Farewell Sosaria.

UO Worlds Faire Notes From Melantus

Melantus, Online Community Coordinator for Ultima Online posted several compilations of notes taken from forums during the UOFaire. OSI has the forum "index" here, and the main (introduction) thread here:

UO Faire Notes *** Main Thread ***

I will begin posting here several threads, each a topic from the UO World Faire sessions. Not all of the notes we took will be in these threads but most of them are. This is being done as a reference of what notes we took, for both players and OSI to be able to refer to if needed. Each session thread will be locked and remain at the top, but this thread will remain open for further comments.

Note that these notes may appear a bit "rough" but are often the direct notes we took while at the Faire. They can be discussed further by the players here and on Discussions. In fact, we encourage that. Remember that this thread is not closed and can be replied upon.

*** The UO Faire notes threads being posted here are not items we are saying are definitely going to occur within UO. They are simply notes taken from the session discussions at the World Faire. They are mainly feedback from players on what they would like to see within UO. ***

    OSI: Testing Ultima Online

The following was just posted to What's New on the UO.com website:

    Testing Ultima Online

We're continuing to work hard to ensure that Ultima Online is as stable and bug-free as possible, but we can always use your help. By participating in tests of new systems and changes, and sending in detailed bug reports, you can make a great difference in Ultima Online. The Test Center shard has been specifically adapted to allow players to easily test game systems. On Test Center, you may adjust your own stats or skills, and your bank box comes filled with a variety of reagents, items, moonstones, and runes.

The best way to contribute to the test environment is by watching the In Testing section of our website to keep up-to-date on the latest changes currently in testing. Once you're familiar with the latest game tests, log in to Test Center and start trying to break them! Try anything, try everything. Test Center is a world we want you to do your best to abuse.

Second, you'll need to submit bug reports to the QA Team in an efficient and timely manner. Bug reports should contain the following information:
    • Client Version Number. This is located at the bottom of the main UO login screen.
    • Server Name
    • Detailed Bug Description (step-by-step, tell us what you did and what happened)
    • Date/Time of Occurrence
    • Location (Sextant coordinates, facet, and city location)
    • On-site references (If you spoke with a counselor or GM, what was his/her name and what were you told?)
It is extremely important to include the necessary steps to recreate a bug, thus allowing the QA Team to promptly review it. We do recommend that you try to be as concise as possible when sending in reports as well. Try to tell us only those steps that were necessary to activate the bug.

Completed bug reports can be sent via email to TCBugs@uo.com. We look forward to working with you!

    OSI: Ultima Online Rewards Program

I read the following on the General Testing page, specifically here, of the Ultima Online Web site:

    Ultima Online Rewards Program

The Ultima Online Rewards program is designed to reward you, our long-term players, for your loyalty to the UO community. It is our way of thanking you and showing our appreciation for your long-term support of UO, and for your contribution to making UO the most popular virtual world in existence today. Screenshots for most of the rewards can be found at the end of this update.

    Determining Account Age
The age of an account will be determined in the following manner:
    • Any account created before November 30, 1999 will automatically be credited for all of the time from the date it was created until November 30, 1999. In other words, if you created your account on October 30, 1998, your account would be credited for 13 months of time, regardless of whether your account was inactive during part of that time.
    • Following November 30, 1999, only the months in which you had an active account will contribute to the total count of months qualifying you for rewards.
    • You can check your account age by logging a character into the game. (Note: Until the Rewards Program has been released, this method may not work, or may return an error message.) To check your account age:
      • Double click your profile scroll.
      • Scroll to the bottom of the scroll window.
      • A horizontal bar will be at the bottom of the profile text. Your account age in years and days will be displayed under that line. The account age will display the same value for all characters on the same account.
    • Updates to your account (such as reactivations) are updated every Sunday, but may not be displayed for several days.
Reward eligibility is determined on a per-account basis. Multiple accounts may not be "combined" to increase eligibility.

    Rewards
There are three categories of player reward levels currently identified as part of the program: players who have been in the game for 12 to 23 months, players who have been in the game for 24 to 35 months, and those who have played for 36 months or more. Each of the three designated categories of long-term players will be offered a different selection of in-game rewards. All reward options are no loot and no steal, and clothing items will never wear out.

12 - 23 Month Players may choose two of the following rewards:
    • Black dye tub
    • Bronze cloak

      • Using normal dyes on this tub (double-clicking the dyes then targeting the special dye-tub) will bring up a menu listing special colors not available through a normal dye-tub.
      • After selecting a color, the dye-tub will then have that hue.
      • Double-clicking the dye tub and targeting an article of clothing will dye that clothing the special color.
24 - 35 Month Players may choose three reward options (two for being a one year player plus one more for being a two year player) from the list of one-year rewards above and the additional two-year rewards listed below:

      • Double-clicking the dye tub and targeting a piece of leather or studded leather armor will dye that clothing the color.
    • Any of the 12 - 23 month reward listed above.
36+ Month Players may choose four reward options (two for being a one year player another one for their two year reward, plus one more for the third year) from among the one and two-year reward choices as well as those additional rewards listed below:
    • Ethereal mount (horse, ostard, or llama; one per reward choice)
      • Transparent hue.
      • Appears as a statue in your backpack.
        • Double clicking the statue will cause the statue to disappear and create the mount and your will automatically mount it.
        • Once on the mount, double clicking yourself will dismount you and automatically transform the mount back into the statue which will reappear in your backpack immediately.
      • Ethereal mounts never lose loyalty and can't be transferred.
      • The mount can never appear without being mounted, therefore it cannot attack or be attacked.
    • Verite cloak
    • Verite +2 AR robe
    • Valorite cloak
    • Valorite +2AR robe
    • Choice of one of three mini-monster statues
      • Zombie
      • Cow
      • Llama
    • Any of the 12 - 23 or 23 - 35 month rewards listed above.
It is important to note that characters on an account with less than the appropriate amount of time will not be able to use some of these items. For instance, if another player gave you a golden cloak, but your account is 20 months old, you would not be able to wear it until your account reached 24 months. This only applies to clothing items and the ethereal horse. Other items such as dye-tubs and monster statues will be usable by any character.

Players who fit into one or more of these categories will have the option to receive their rewards when they log into the game after attaining a reward level. Rewards are given on a "per account" basis, but may be divided among characters on an account. It is very important to make sure you have the correct character logged on before choosing a reward. Game Masters and other OSI personnel will not be able to transfer rewards from one character to another. For example, a player who has a 24 month old account may choose to accept two rewards with a character on one shard, and may choose the remaining reward with a different character. The option to collect rewards will appear each time you log in to the game until you have chosen the total awards for which you are eligible. You will be given the option to collect any rewards for which your account is eligible upon release of the program, regardless of account anniversary date. Thus, for example, if your account is 23 months old, you will be eligible for the 12-month rewards on the day the program is released, and will be eligible for your 24-month rewards as soon as your account reaches 24-months.

If you make a rewards program selection during a final backup or before a server crash, the system may not have adequate time to save your choice. When the shard returns to service, it may take a few minutes for the server to recognize that you have not gotten your reward. The system will account for this however, and after a few minutes you will be able to select a reward.
